The author discusses the history of the development of the principle of relativity. He distinguishes three stages : 1) principle of relativity of Galileo and its development in works of Huygens, Newton, d’Alembert and Lagrange; 2) extension of the principle of relativity to electrodynamics by Lorentz and Poincaré and Special Relativity by Einstein and Minkowski; 3) realization of principle of relativity in General Relativity as ‘general covariance’ of physical equations.
