Linear thermoelastic singular surfaces: A revision. (English) Zbl 0777.73011

Summary: The theory of singular surfaces of order \(N\geq 1\), \(N=1\) indicating a shock, in elastic materials subject to infinitesimal dynamic deformations and conducting heat according to the Maxwell law \(\tau\dot q+q=- K\cdot\nabla\theta\) is reviewed and revised according to a different interpretation of the integral form of this law to that previously encountered. It turns out that shock waves must be isentropic and travel with the appropriate sound speed. Other fundamentally different conclusions result from these two facts.
