Introduction to logic and to the methodology of the deductive sciences. 4th ed. (English) Zbl 0796.03001

Oxford Logic Guides. 24. Oxford: Univ. Press. xxii, 229 p. £25.00 /hc (1994).
Jan Tarski has prepared this fourth edition of Alfred Tarski’s 1936 classic text from the third American edition of (1965; Zbl 0171.251). Under the initiative of Dana Scott, planning for this fourth edition began after Alfred Tarski’s death in 1983. Originally the plan was to revise and expand the text. Consideration of expansions led to a decision to include them in a companion volume. Work on the companion volume is in progress. Hence, the contents of the fourth edition are those of the original. In a preface the edition lists and justifies the revisions to improve the translations and to conform to current mathematical usage. The terminological and linguistic revisions along with the editor’s explanatory footnotes make it an excellent text for a first course in mathematical logic in the late 90’s. The editor also offers a brief biographical sketch of his father.
