Explicit Numerov type methods with constant coefficients: a review. (English) Zbl 1387.65065

Summary: A comprehensive discussion of explicit two-step methods for special second order Initial Value Problem is presented. Additionally a new family of hybrid Numerov methods attaining eighth algebraic order is given at a cost of only seven function evaluations per step. Its coefficients are chosen to reduce truncation or phase errors. We proceed with extensive numerical tests over a wide range of relevant methods and problems. Appendices with order conditions and coefficients of the methods are also given.
