Analytical formulation of a new cochlear model for speech preception. (English) Zbl 1144.94004
A new model for the human cochlea using the continuous wavelet transform is introduced. It is proved mathematically that the response of the human ear to a speech signal can be interpreted as the wavelet transform of the signal. A logarithmic perception scale for the recognition of speech signals is also derived based on the discrete wavelet transform. Therewith a more compact representation of speech signals is obtained compared to the classically used MEL scale.
