Tensorrechnung für Ingenieure. (German) Zbl 0625.15019

This book concerns tensors in Cartesian coordinates and their physical and engineering applications, in part resulting from the author’s own work. It is addressed to engineering students and engineers in research and industry. It differs from its predecessor [Elementare Tensorrechnung für Ingenieure (1977; Zbl 0358.15032)] by some changes in the main chapters (Chap. B on tensor algebra and Chap. C on tensor analysis, including integral theorems) and by the addition of a fifty-page survey chapter on tensor functions as well as short introductions to tensors in general coordinates and to conformal mapping, of about ten pages each. The presentation in Chaps. B and C is traditional, with emphasis on engineering applications and physical motivations rather than on mathematical proofs. The new Chap. D on tensor functions consists of three parts, treating scalar valued tensor functions, tensor valued tensor functions and interpolation theory for the latter. About 50 figures and over 200 problems with complete solutions are included, to help the reader in obtaining a deeper understanding of the material presented.
The Ricci calculus is not discussed. The book, a photoreproduction from ordinary typescript (not TEX), would have gained, had it been set by the compositor, particularly because of the many indices which are crowding the problem sets, the solutions and some other pages.
