A beautiful collection of tracks that sounds like a soundtrack of a documentary of nature and man. Very dance able.
Favorite track: Melaleuca (at night).

Yu Su is one of the most exciting dancefloor architects currently building. Every song is a moody incandescent dome that I want to shake my rump inside for all eternity.
Favorite track: Gleam.

Touch-Me-Not and Gleam stand out to me amidst this beautifully wide ranging album lead by the single that hooked me, Xiu. The former creates an atmosphere of insightful joy between fluttering bursts of delay and softly droning chords, whilst the latter blends such softness amidst percussive rhythms perfectly poised between relaxation and activity. Overall, the album is like walking through choice parts of the journey that inspired it. A wonderful release!
Favorite track: Touch-Me-Not.

In the winter of 2019, the Vancouver-based Chinese musician Yu Su traveled from Qingdao on the west coast of the Yellow Sea to Xining, the largest city on the Tibetan Plateau. During this tour, which corresponded to both ends of the Yellow River, she encountered musical artists and enthusiasts at the foreground of the explosive leftfield electronic scene across China and was inspired to participate and contribute.
Yellow River Blue, Yu Su's open-ended response to this experience, is a smooth and emotionally charged listen. Drawing on her own rich listening experience and a keen awareness of personal experiences, Yu Su's compositions contain a complex quality that transcends all genres, her own cultural roots and living environments. The tranquil musical landscape is not only a result of her intimate relationship with nature but also a scenery curated for reflecting her personal emotions.
Through the carefully chosen symbols and imageries in Yu Su's music, you can see her intention to disturb the boundaries of "traditional and modern", "central and peripheral", and "self and other", as well as her gentle and clear self-portrait. Sailing a light boat in an increasingly turbulent current, Yu Su raises an ancient canvas with a sense of ease, to guide a new direction for herself and for the chaotic winds of the world.
The newly established label bié Records follows Yu Su's winter 2019 tour of mainland China where she travelled from Qingdao, the western shore of Yellow Sea Coast to Xining, the largest urban hub on the Tibetan Plateau. As she encounters musical artists and enthusiasts at the foreground of the explosive leftfield electronic scene across China, she is inspired to participate and contribute; Yu Su is delighted to offer her debut album Yellow River Blue for release through bié Records in China, with a European vinyl edition delivered by Amsterdam-based Music From Memory.

As an electronic music producer and DJ born in Kaifeng, Henan and now living in Vancouver, Yu Su is brave enough to challenge the Eurocentric thinking prevalent in today's music scene without indulging in any conceptual stereotypes such as "ethnic", "futuristic", and "fourth world". She draws as much inspiration from leftfield dance music and her wandering personal experiences as she does from nature; the genre labels "pop", "experimental" or "ambient" are associated with her, yet neither is accurate. Yu Su's work is always affectionate, soulful, easy on the ear, and the playfulness of the work emerges as the soundscape unfolds.
As a producer, Yu Su has released her work through notable labels such as Ninja Tune and Music From Memory, while her remarkable DJ sets of oddball anthems have swept the world, taking over dancefloors at a lineage of culturally important clubs such as Concrete, //about blank, Nowadays, and Contact, receiving fervent responses at the major global electronic festivals like Dekmantel, OFFSonar, Nuits Sonores, and Mutek.
