Etymology

Украина (Ukraina, Ukraine) +‎ -о- (-o-) +‎ питек (pitek, austropithecus, brute). Originally coined in mockery towards Ukrainian nationalist beliefs about their country as "the oldest nation in the world",[1] later used to dehumanize Ukrainian nationalists and people in general as fanatics, or Ukraine itself as a backwards country.
