Barhai are an occupational community of carpenters of which the majority are Hindus and only a small section of Muslims. They derive the name of their community from the Sanskrit word "vardhika' meaning 'cutting'. They are mostly Hindu and use various surnames or titles like Sharma, Vishwakarma are Bharadwaj, Mistri and Badhai
