South Asian immigration to France has seemingly always involved some sort of illegality and this is true for much of the Punjabi Sikh population as well.[2] Thousands of Sikhs in France engage in practices where they will apply for residency in Southern European countries like Spain and Italy while living and working in France. This practice has been termed as semi-legal. Another route that many Sikhs have used to gain French citizenship is by claiming a life threatening illness which in many cases has led to some members of the Sikh community falsifying medical records. Undocumented Sikh migrants will also engage in “borrowing” documents including but not limited to, false passports.[2]

A major issue for Punjabi Sikh illegal migrants is work and many in the community engage in menial low-paid jobs.[2]
