A supermarket, or grocery, is a store or market that sells food, drugs, beverages, clothes and other household products that are consumed on a frequent basis. A supermarket ordinarily offers a great variety of basic genres. Often, a supermarket is part of a chain, that owns or controls (sometimes by a franchising form) other supermarkets located in the same and/or in oth towns.

Supermarket generally offer products at low prices by reducing margins which are typically 2 or 3 percent. To maintain a profit supermarkets attempt to make up for the low margins with high volume of sales. The first supermarket was A and P. In the United States the growth of supermarkets was matched with the growth of suburban areas after World War II. Supermarkets in the United States are often found matched with department stores in strip malls and are generally regional rather than national.
