What Are the Kibbe Body Types?
The Kibbe body types are 13 image-based body shapes that can be divided into 5 categories. This body type system was created by David Kibbe and gained traction in 1987 with the publication of his book Metamorphosis: Discover Your Image Identity. Kibbe categorized the body on a yin-yang spectrum, with yin representing stereotypically feminine features and yang illustrating the more masculine ones. His theory revolves around the idea that every body falls somewhere along the scale, leaning more towards yin or yang characteristics. According to Kibbe, knowing your body type and characteristics can help you make appropriate fashion choices that flatter your natural physique and energy.
- Dramatic is the most yang body type. This body type has sharp, angular features and a lean and tall frame. Tilda Swinton is an excellent example of a Dramatic.
- Soft Dramatic has angular features with a soft edge. This body type has rounder angles than its Dramatic counterpart but is still lean and tall. Tyra Banks is considered a Soft Dramatic.
- Flamboyant Natural is next on the scale. This body type is tall and lean but has soft and blunt features that are slightly more feminine. Princess Diana is a great example of a Flamboyant Natural.
- Natural is slightly more masculine than feminine. This body type has straight and blunt features that give a natural or effortless glow. Jennifer Aniston is an excellent example of a Natural.
- Soft Natural has more feminine features than masculine. This body type has straight lines, but they’re slightly more rounded than its Natural counterpart. Molly Ringwald is considered a Soft Natural.
- Dramatic Classic is slightly more masculine. This body type has balanced features with muscular symmetry. Phylicia Rashad is an excellent example of a Dramatic Classic.
- Classic is a combination of yin and yang characteristics, falling in the middle of the spectrum. This body type has an effortless quality with even proportions and balanced energy. Grace Kelly is a prime example of a Classic.
- Soft Classic has more feminine features. This body type is balanced with slightly rounded and symmetrical features. Meryl Streep is a perfect example of a Soft Classic.
- Flamboyant Gamine has dramatic and balanced features. This body type is often petite and feminine but has a slight edge. Audrey Hepburn is a prime example of a Flamboyant Gamine.
- Gamine has a feminine face and masculine frame. This body type has soft features and an angular or straight frame. Audrey Tautou is considered a Gamine.
- Soft Gamine is balanced and petite. This body type has rounded features that are slightly angular. Mindy Kaling is a great example of a Soft Gamine.
- Theatrical Romantic is mostly feminine with a hint of masculine. This body type has soft and delicate features with a sharper frame. Rihanna is a prime example of a Theatrical Romantic.
- Romantic is the most yin body type. This body type has the softest and roundest features and a delicate frame. Marilyn Monroe is an excellent example of a Romantic.
