A food-filled weekend in Chicago

Being from Milwaukee, Chicago is only a 1.5 hour train ride away so I am a regular visitor. It's one of my favorite cities in the U.S and arguably has the best food, too. With a mix of food and sightseeing, here is how I would spend a weekend eating my way through the city.

I've been coming here to learn about Black history since I was a kid—I love revisiting! The museum houses a lot of Black history specific to Hyde Park, too.

Cruise down the Chicago River to see the city's famous architecture on this boat tour. With commentary from your onboard guide, watch the spectacular skyline glide by, including more than 40 notable buildings like the Wrigley Building and the John Hancock Building. This may be the only tour that both locals and tourists agree is worth it. I recommend doing the 6:15 p.m. tour to catch the sunset!

I love visiting Black-owned bookstores and Semicolon is a must. Though there is a new location downtown, the original is in West Town, and doubles as a gallery of vibrant, local art.

A Chicago institution for more than a century, the Conservatory's Main Garden blooms with more than 40,000 annuals.

From the Delta, I caught a rideshare to the (free) conservatory. The park itself is beautiful and the conservatory is small, but stunning. It's a great way to decompress after a big meal.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago! I've had their salmon, mac and cheese, biscuits, collard greens, and more. And my favorite dessert is their banana pudding. Come ready to eat!

On my way back towards the train station, I stopped at MCCB in Chinatown. I love their sesame chicken because it's so tender! Get there early because the dinner rush fills up fast.

La Chaparrita is a Mexican grocery store and restaurant. My favorite is the huitlacoche taco, which features a corn fungus that is indigenous to Mexico. It tastes a bit truffley and is entirely tasty.

For a lighter meal, I opted for Sip and Savor. They have a mix of pastries, teas, coffee, and more for a slow morning and walk in the Hyde Park neighborhood.

This is where Southern cuisine and a breakfast sandwiches meet, making me a very happy girl! The highlights for me were the special chicken sausage sandwich and the bellini.

Get out of downtown and check out the SOPHY in Hyde Park. I stayed here to enjoy some of Chicago's best Black-owned restaurants and shops. It's also an area where you can rent bikes to sightsee.
