We never heard of Dakota Shy, this place was recommended to us by our concierge.
We had an amazing experience there, our hostess was great and informative. The wine was a huge hit for us on this trip.
They only produce a limited number of cases a year and it is not a wine you can find in wine stores, defiantly in at the Canadian LCBO.
We joined the club and will surely be ordering it on a regular basis.
Only regret is that we did not know about this wine earlier !

Was able to taste with Todd Newman of Dakota Shy recently and had a really good experience there. Todd had a fascinating story to tell about his background and how he wanted to build Dakota Shy from the ground up. My friends and I tasted the current "TEN" Cabernet Sauvignon as well as a couple of barrel samples and really enjoyed them - more elegant and refined than a lot of Napa Valley Cabs. Like most Napa Cabs, the TEN isn't cheap but it's very well-priced in comparison to other wines of similar quality and reputation. Tastings are appointment-only, and I certainly recommend a visit if you enjoy fine Napa Cabernet.

We did a tasting with Todd after being referred there by the concierge at Auberge. We really enjoyed meeting Todd and the wine was great. Todd has a motivating story to tell and you can tell he is genuine. Both couples in our group joined his winery and bought wine. It's a beautiful property and we hope to go back again...to taste more wine and to catch up with Todd.

I contacted Tom Garrett in an effort to set up a tasting appointment for Detert Family Vineyards because they are known for a fantastic Cabernet Franc. I was only in Napa for a day, but Tom was so accommodating. He was already scheduled to be at Dakota Shy that day so he fit me into his busy schedule and provided a fantastic private tasting event of BOTH Dakota Shy and Detert Family Vineyard wines at Dakota Shy. Amazing on all accounts. I am sure Tom had a thousand other things he could or should have been doing, but he was very gracious to sit down with me for over an hour. Tom has probably forgotten more about wine than I will ever know. I recommend visiting BOTH the Detert Family Vineyards as well as Dakota Shy. Wines are unique and fantastic.

The property is where the wine is made, but the grapes come in from all over, based on relationships with the wine maker and the owner. Starting out as a waiter and sommelier at a Michelin rated restaurant, Todd really started to learn about wines from the bottom up. He is not the "I made millions in tech" type, but instead is from North Dakota, where family and personality matter. Nicknamed as "shy" by his friends, the name of the winery is obvious! However, with time, he as been able to build a nice brand with fabulous wines that really do hit the mark with Tom Garrett as his winemaker. The grapes are sourced and produce a fabulous cabernet. You need an appointment and after having the wine, you will join the Shy Society!

We were introduced to Dakota Shy from the concierge at Auberge. I have to say that it was one of the truly best visits we had. Todd the owner was quite impressive with his story on how he started the business to how quality and importance of the product is number one. A very intimate setting and wine tasting. The wines are truly fantastic and very memorable. All in all you will come away feeling great about Dakota Shy along with the wines that they produce. Todd, thank you for a wonderful tasting and for sharing your story of success with us...... You are living the American dream......

We were a group of 6 who enjoy excellent wines. We were referred by someone working at another winery to give Dakota Shy a try. We made an appointment and we had a wonderful experience. We were met by the founder Todd. They had been crushing grapes all morning and Todd had just finished up lunch with their team. We went over to a tasting table set up in a nearby stand of redwood trees. We proceeded to taste some wonderful-wonderful wines. Tom the winemaker nailed it on variety after variety. Todd and Tom have a great story to tell about meeting each other and getting into wine making together. The 2 hours we sat there went so quickly. Tom did walk by while we were with Todd and he answered questions and described some things, which from a winemaker’s point of view were fascinating. All 6 of us purchased wine that day, and are looking forward to its delivery. I highly recommend you visit Dakota Shy.

A visit to this winery requires a reservation I think. I was not the one in charge but I do know who had an appointment. We were met by the owner and winemaker and instantly the whole group felt a connection with him because of his simple hard working personality. An American man from the heartland of this great country he had a dream to be a winemaker and simply worked hard to obtain it. We were treated to a lovely snack lunch under a magazine worthy Pergola on a beautiful April morning. The wine was wonderful and the entire experience exactly what I envisioned for my first trip to wine country.

Stopped here after making an appointment with some other couples last week. We were greeted by one of the winemakers as we were a little early and Payton was finishing up another tasting. Their building/tasting room is brand new and looks great. We learned about the history of the winery and where the name "Dakota Shy" came from (I won't spoil it, you'll have to go there). Tasting was great, their reds are awesome and we bought a few bottles. We bought a coaster too but when we got home realized it was damaged and Payton actually mailed us a new one. Very cool.
