“Sleepy! It'll take time for the sleepiness to wear off!”
Battle text, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Sleep in the Super Mario franchise is a status ailment in the role-playing games. It is forced and cannot be easily woken from, unlike when characters fall asleep as an idle animation.

History[edit]

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[edit]

In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Sleep is one of the more common status ailments that the player can have. A physical attack will wake a character from Sleep, but a magical attack will not. While sleeping, a character is completely immobile and helpless. Additionally, Princess Peach is able to inflict this condition on enemies with her Sleepy Time spell. The Wake-Up Pin and some other accessories will prevent this condition.

Attacks that cause Sleep[edit]

Attacks marked with an asterisk (*) also cause damage, while attacks marked with double asterisks affect the entire opposition.

Paper Mario series[edit]

Paper Mario[edit]

An Anti Guy, asleep

When a character is asleep, they cannot do anything for a few turns. Unlike in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, the character cannot be woken up until the effect wears off. Mario can inflict Sleep on enemies by using the Sleepy Sheep item, Mamar's Lullaby, or equipping the Sleepy Stomp Badge. Much like with dizziness, certain enemies are more vulnerable than others. Clubbas, often found sleeping out of battle, will be affected for four turns (alongside White Clubbas, all plant-type enemies, and Kent C. Koopa), where most other enemies will be down for three. Only Crazee Dayzees and Amazy Dayzees can inflict sleep on Mario; their song attacks can put him to sleep for three turns, but have a low chance of doing so (20% for Crazee Dayzees, 15% for Amazy Dayzees). The Strange Cake and Kooky Cookie item may also inflict the Sleep ailment on Mario. When a character is inflicted with Sleep, they are surrounded by a blue aura accompanied by low-pitched lullaby tones.

The Sleep status ailment returns in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and its Nintendo Switch remake. It is indicated by multiple hovering "Z"s and a Sleepy Sheep icon above the afflicted character. The number by the Sleepy Sheep indicates how many turns the character will remain asleep if undisturbed. In these games, when sleeping characters are attacked, there is a chance that they will wake. This is signified by a small exclamation point over the character when they are attacked. If the player is inflicted with the sleep effect, they can still use Action Commands such as Guard and Superguard. The timing windows for these actions will be reduced while sleep is in effect, however. Crazee Dayzees, Amazy Dayzees, and Bonetail can all inflict this ailment with their attacks, Mario's party or an enemy with the Sleepy Sheep item can inflict Sleep on the opposing party, and Mario can also cause it through the Sleepy Stomp badge.

In the remake, the probability of being woken from Sleep early is changed in such a way that most enemy attacks, as well as all Mario and partner attacks, are no longer capable of ending Sleep early. This makes the status far more powerful.[1]

Super Paper Mario[edit]

In Super Paper Mario, if the character is attacked by a Cherbil, a Crazee Dayzee, or an Amazy Dayzee, they will fall asleep and must be awakened by shaking the Wii Remote until the on-screen meter is filled up, unless the player gets attacked by an enemy. Also, the player can make enemies fall asleep by using a Sleepy Sheep. In the Underchomp battle, the player can use Piccolo to temporarily make all of its heads fall asleep (this is based on Cerberus' weakness of falling asleep when music is played in Greek mythology). Also, Mario and co. (including any character traveling with the heroes, such as Squirps or Luvbi) will sleep as an idle animation (that is, after a prolonged period of inactivity), and Tippi will perch herself atop the head of the hero currently onscreen.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]

Inflicted by a Baahammer, the Sleep status ailment acts like the Mushroom status ailment from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars: unable to attack, though slightly heals every turn. The sleep status also can be caused by using the Pillow, Bed, and Luxurious Bed Things. Mario can also become asleep from the Things with sleep properties unless the player mashes A Button repeatedly. Kamek's purple spell can put Mario to sleep too. If a Piranha Plant or a Fire Piranha is put to sleep, Mario can freely stomp on the enemy with any Jump type sticker until the enemy wakes up.

Mario & Luigi series[edit]

While the status ailment does not exist in the traditional sense, Snoozorbs in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time start battles asleep, not acting until the player wakes them with an attack. In Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, the Sleep condition is unique to the final battle against Antasma. Each of his attacks have a chance to put Mario to sleep, which triggers a unique sequence where Antasma attacks him with nightmares. When the nightmare is successfully escaped, the Sleep condition ends.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

SmashWiki article: Asleep

Characters can go to sleep (the status effect here known as Asleep) in the Super Smash Bros. games by Jigglypuff's Sing attack, Luigi (in Super Smash Bros. Brawl) and Peach's Final Smashes (Negative Zone and Peach Blossom, respectively), Hero's Snooze spell (used with Command Selection), Darkrai's Dark Void, and Bellossom's Sweet Scent. This leaves them vulnerable for opponents to attack them. Players that move the control stick and mash buttons will wake faster.

In Super Smash Bros., characters with lower damage percentages sleep for longer, while in Super Smash Bros. Melee onward characters at higher percents sleep longer. In addition, characters in the air cannot be put to sleep (unless they are hit by Hero's Snooze spell, though they will wake up much faster). Attacking a sleeping opponent automatically wakes them up. With the exception of Sing, which does not affect airborne opponents, characters struck with the ailment in the air will fall to the ground helplessly until they land, where they enact the full sleeping animation.

In Super Smash Bros., when characters are put to sleep, the animation is simply the character's dizzy animation with music notes appearing from that character (as Sing is the only way to put opponents to sleep). In Super Smash Bros. Melee onward, each character has a proper sleeping animation.

Mario + Rabbids series[edit]

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

The sleep status effect appears in the Donkey Kong Adventure DLC of Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, where Rabbid Cranky can use his Long Story technique to put nearby enemies to sleep for one turn. If enemies are attacked while they are asleep, they will wake up instantly.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]

Sleep, referred to as Stasis, returns in Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, this time triggered by Rabbid Rosalina's Ennui technique and functions the same way as in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. When an enemy is under the effects of Stasis, their body turns completely dark blue and has a padlock around them. Rabbid Rosalina can also unlock Ennui Dash via the skill tree which causes her dash attack to inflict enemies with Stasis. Another unlockable upgrade makes enemies take 30% more damage while under the Stasis Super Effect.
