Pickpick

Penelope sits in her role as magistrate while a man is tried for theft. At the same time, she puts her own life on trial as she reflects on her decision to leave her husband for her lover. A taut, well-written account of how we show up in relationships and what it means to be a 'good' person. Maude would approve. 😆
Published in 1976, it means I've completed my first decade for the #192025 challenge! @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Hooray!! I still have a bit to go for the 1970s. 2d
BarbaraBB Wow impressive, finishing the 70s! 2d
merelybookish @Librarybelle I have a bit to go in all the other decades! 😁 2d

merelybookish @BarbaraBB Thanks! It feels like progress! Are you doing the challenge? 2d
BarbaraBB Yes I am but I am not doing good. After a decade of reading the classics (obsessed by the #1001books list) I now mainly read contemporary books. The #192025 challenge came a bit too late for me 😉 2d
merelybookish @BarbaraBB Interesting! I think I've gone The other way. For a long time I mostly read contemporary fiction and was obsessed with the #tob. Now I am more drawn to the old and obscure. 2d
BarbaraBB That is interesting indeed. I think I‘ll be going there again too. I notice I am often annoyed by US contemporary fiction and am shifting my focus to the rest of the world. 1d
merelybookish @BarbaraBB I think I started to find contemporary fiction limited in its scope. But I still read a few things but am maybe more selective 12h

David Copperfield | Charles Dickens

Happy Saturday morning! I‘m starting a quiet Saturday morning with breakfast casserole and coffee while I catch up on the last few chapters of David Copperfield for October.

I have lots of things to work on at home today since I‘ve been gone the last few weekends, but I plan to listen to lots of audio and fit in some print reading for the Dewey‘s Readathon as well.

Tamra Oh, that looks like something I want for breakfast! 😋 1w
Daisey @Tamra It was a no recipe, use what I had, kind of breakfast and it turned out perfectly! 1w
Tamra @Daisey the best kind! 👏🏾 1w
Cuilin I‘m so behind for DC. This is catch up week. Your breakfast looks delicious. 1w

Pickpick

A soft pick. I found sections of it to be brilliant, but got bogged down in others. I‘m sure the style was deemed quite daring for 1925.

I listened to half of this one because I hadn‘t read it yet, it‘s a #1001books book & I needed it for a challenge prompt.
The story is made up of sterotypes: all women narrator Patrick Bateman meets are “hardbodies”, the repetitive naming of designer brands, the drugs, the booze, the wealth, the boredom, the killings. I despised it and enjoyed it and appreciate what Easton Ellis does.
I totally get it, I don‘t need the second half of the book!

Suet624 yeah, no need to read that one. 1mo

I liked this better than some of Woolf‘s books I‘ve read, but it still got long and I‘m not sure what I‘m supposed to get from that ending. At the same time, there are so many examples of lovely writing. I‘m looking forward to discussion because I‘m hoping it will help me get more from her books that generally just aren‘t my style.

I started listening to this while prepping and grilling supper tonight. I don‘t tend to be a fan of Woolf‘s style, but so far I‘m kind of enjoying listening.

I do understand! I was casually listening to my audiobook today when this line caught my attention. I had to find the passage in Serial Reader and share. I never would have caught this allusion without the experience of reading #Clarissa.

Ruthiella I love it when that happens! 3mo
Daisey @Ruthiella Yes! It also sometimes makes me wonder just how many allusions I‘m missing too. 3mo

This story mostly takes place in Turkey in the 1990s and is very much a discussion of the intersection of religion and politics. I found it interesting at times and long at other times. It may have been better if I had more understanding of the historical context.

Chosen for #FoodAndLit in July but just now finished.

I know this was satire, but I don‘t know enough about what the author was trying to say to get all of it. That aside, it was just plain ridiculous in many places and I did have a few laughs. However, it‘s a low pick as it still took me a long time to get through.

I‘m enjoying some quiet with a book and an iced coffee in the hammock this morning. I‘ve barely made any time to read this book this month, so I‘m trying to make a bit of progress.
