    This #VeteransDay, we're honoring Avon Cornelius, who exemplifies the incredible skills and dedication veterans bring to the workforce.  After a decade on the front lines, Avon transitioned to public relations and marketing roles within the U.S. Army, discovering a passion that would shape his future. When his 20 years of service came to an end, he felt a mix of excitement and apprehension about re-entering civilian life. He decided to build on the transferable skills he gained in the army by completing the Google Digital Marketing & E-Commerce Certificate. The flexibility of the certificate allowed him to take care of his family and job hunt at the same time. After Avon completed the certificate, he shared, “It definitely helped me as I was interviewing with companies. I was able to talk about the greatest relevant trends and topics which helped me get a couple of different job offers.” Shortly after, he accepted a position at Chicago Public Media, leading marketing for two radio stations and a newspaper. This role brought a 20% salary increase, a hybrid work schedule with improved work-life balance, and the confidence of becoming a "10x better marketer." Avon's success didn't stop there. He recently joined Booz Allen Hamilton as a Brand and Communications Lead, leveraging his skills and experiences to continue advancing his career.     This week, The Google School for Leaders and Grow with Google hosted HR and L&D leaders in New York City for an inspirational day about the future of AI, talent, and learning. I learned so much from my peers and other Googlers who shared the latest on our AI-powered tools, resources, and how Google applies them to the work we do every day. Some key takeaways from the day: 1️⃣ The impact of AI on the workforce and learning is unlike any transformation we’ve seen before. Using AI is about building new skills and a new mindset. Which is why HR and L&D are key drivers in navigating this change. Connecting with a group of peers who are at the nexus of AI, talent, and learning to share challenges, best practice, and opportunities is critical to getting this right. 2️⃣ The opportunities provided by AI are immense for both organizations and their people; but the impact of AI will be limited by the skills and ability of everyone to use it. Across organizations and industries, people are eager to learn AI skills to help them be more creative and focus on the parts of their work they enjoy most. 3️⃣ As leaders, we should be role models in learning about and using AI–whether it’s using AI within our teams, upleveling our own generative AI prompting skills, or spending more time using AI at home and at work.  The energy throughout the day was palpable, and I hope it is just the beginning of many more insightful discussions, shared learnings, and meaningful connections to come. We're committed to helping organizations navigate the AI landscape and prepare their workforce for the future of work. A big thank you to all of my counterparts for their time, openness, insights, and wisdom throughout the day.     He spent years hiring tech professionals, then became one himself! This #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth, we're sharing Jonathon's inspiring career journey and how he used the Google Cybersecurity Certificate to transition into a hands-on technical career. With six years in the U.S. Marine Corps under his belt, Jon transitioned into civilian life with a career in the IT field. At the beginning of his career, he took on a content development manager position that focused on hiring and training teams of IT professionals. He spent thirteen years in this position, only to find himself out of a job due to unforeseen circumstances. Jon at first felt a bit lost. He spent six months considering who he wanted to be and what he wanted to do next. That’s when he realized he now had the chance to move into the technical side of the industry. Specifically, he wanted to build a career in cybersecurity. Although he had experience hiring IT professionals, he had not worked directly in the fields of IT or cybersecurity and did not have the direct skill set to transition to that type of role. In his previous role, when hiring technicians, he specifically looked for candidates with a Google IT Support or CompTIA Certificate on their resume as having one of those certificates shortened the typical 10-week training period by about two weeks for new hires. That’s why, when it came time for his own career transition, he turned to the Google Cybersecurity Certificate to upskill. He found the program incredibly valuable, especially because it allowed him to practice using his new skills in real-world scenarios. He says, “[The certificate] really helps lay the foundational knowledge for work and provides context to the textbook understanding.” After completing the certificate, Jon landed a position as an End User Support Specialist at Performance Health, where he works as a vital link between IT operations and cybersecurity teams. He also continued his learning journey by earning his CompTIA Security+ LLP. Jon believes the Google Cybersecurity Certificate was a turning point in his career, saying, “The impact was HUGE!” He also marvels at how he continues to draw on his certificate knowledge every day: “I am more confident in meetings discussing a much wider range of topics since taking my Google Cybersecurity Certificate.” Jon turned a challenging moment into a career success story.
