The New mmW "Porcupine" Channel Sounder from NI and AT&T is Missing Quills (Beams)!

AT&T debuts 5G channel sounder ‘Porcupine’ with NI | FierceWireless.

I am afraid this is a “wounded” porcupine – many of the quills (beams) are missing! Using a lens antenna array for the sectors (as in the CAP-MIMO prototype below developed at the UW-Madison) would make the porcupine whole again! With a lens array, each “sector” covered by a single horn antenna above, would be larger (to fill the gaps in coverage) and spanned by many beams (16 shown below) – thereby replacing the missing quills (beams)!

This is very disappointing coming from two industrial leaders - especially given all we know at this time! We can do a lot better!
