In 2023, startup investors significantly reduced both the amount of capital deployed and the number of deals, indicating a widespread deceleration in dealmaking among the majority of active investors. However, it's noteworthy that on the list of top post-seed lead investors, Andreessen Horowitz reclaimed its position at the top. #startup #fintech #tech #proptech

As we start the new year, it is important to reflect on the investments made by top VC funds in 2023 compared to 2022 and how the ecosystem may shape up in 2024 both in terms of deals volume and capital deployed. This Crunchbase article provides some rankings that could be used as a reference for the past two years. It is interesting to see that in general, most of the usual busiest (and largest) investors continued to back a lot of companies, but did fewer deals and put less capital to work than they did in 2021. As for 2024, we are all hoping to see a more active investment scenario and while there is no guarantee that will happen, we can almost predict that the numbers this year will look better than those in 2023. https://lnkd.in/gfy39DRf #startups #startupinvestment #startupnews #startupfunding

I just read a fascinating article about how angel investing has evolved in the tech industry. Previously, individuals with industry expertise, but not necessarily industry fame, could make significant seed-stage investments in high-potential startups. Ken Arnold’s experience investing in semiconductor startup NextInput early on, for example, shows just how accessible angel investing used to be for those with the proper knowledge, timing, and network. However, according to investors like Arnold, this accessibility no longer exists. With big brand venture capital firms, hedge funds, and accelerators shifting into early-stage investments, angels are increasingly “elbowed out” of coveted deals. This change reflects a broader market trend: a shift toward institutionalization and focusing on strategic value beyond simple experience. As Institutional capital continues to dominate early-stage investing I imagine this will continue to lead to fewer opportunities for smaller investors and independent angel investors. Additionally, as Dave Spector and Ali Partovi pointed out, just offering capital as an investor is insufficient. Startups seek investors who bring networks, operational insights, and an industry reputation to their company. This competitive environment might allow for innovative funding models like syndicates or tokenized equity as investors look for new ways to get involved. Much of this may help startups with a vision and timeline that institutions recognize and value but I can’t help but wonder if startups with non traditional visions and goals will be left behind. Financial institutions can struggle with group think and other limits of their structure. For aspiring business owners and investors like myself, this is a reminder that the landscape is continuously evolving. Success will require staying informed, adapting to new structures, and finding creative ways to prove and provide value early. https://lnkd.in/e9EnqEzf Washington University in St. Louis - Olin Business School #startups #investing #tech #venturecapital David Spector Ali Partovi
