Audiobooks are not a trend, fad, or a craze. They are now simply the way some people (10-20% of readers, according to most analyses) choose to read their books. Partial proof is in the number of major publications and platforms sharing audiobook recommendations. Since it's the spooky Halloween season, many are sharing their best and scariest audiobooks, including The Wall Street Journal, Spotify, New York Post, Runner's World (yes, Runner's World), Reader's Digest, and more. Audiobooks are quickly becoming more mainstream, and more than half of the population in the United States have listened to at least one. Audiobook revenue grew 9% in 2023 to $2 billion, continuing the year-on-year growth trend according to the Audio Publishers Association’s Sales Survey conducted by Toluna Harris Interactive. However, piracy is becoming a real problem for the industry; 47% of those who listened to an audiobook last year say they got one for free through YouTube or another file-sharing website.

Free Audiobooks Not Available In Premium Account – Users Claim The free Audiobooks plan for Premium Members was launched recently. When I tried to use it, it said “locked”, and mentioned that I had to pay to access the content. My friends and family are able to listen to the audiobooks for free, but I can’t. If this is why I am locked out, I wonder if it’s because I use the gift card payment option for Spotify (buying the card at the supermarket then entering the code rather than providing my banking details). If that is the case I think it’s unfair, as I still pay for my membership. 🎧 Why are audiobooks such a powerful way of storytelling? 💤 I’m reflecting on why I love audiobooks so much, apart from the fact that my eyeballs don’t dry out if I’m listening while lying down in the afternoon to take a break when my energy is lowest. 🎭 Whether my eyes are open or not, audio recordings evoke the theatre of the mind. ✨ I co-create scenes in my head with the author, whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. 📻 It’s like listening to those old-fashioned radio dramas. 🎨 You have to imagine what’s going on, and I love that. 🛣️ That’s why I often use audiobooks as a reward either to listen to while I’m doing tedious tasks like housework or to tolerate the frustrating ones like traffic or long road trips. 📚 It calms me down knowing that I’m not wasting time; I’m enjoying it because I’m wrapped up in a story or learning something or both. 🏖️ Then there’s the pure bliss of listening to a story while taking a walk, lying on the beach or falling asleep in a hammock. 🔄 And don’t worry about nodding off … just go back to where you last remember and start over for more of that layered learning. 🧠 Apparently, our brains are still absorbing information even when we sleep. 🎉 Did you know that my new memoir Wine Witch on Fire: Rising from the Ashes of Divorce, Defamation, and Drinking Too Much is now available as an audiobook? I love that my Spotify premium plan comes with 15 free hours of audiobooks each month. Last month, I used some of those hours re-reading Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. Bourdain provides his top tips for someone looking to work in a restaurant. As I listened to his tips, I found myself pausing the audio to record the tips on my phone to share with all of you. This advice applies to any job in any industry! His first tip struck me as important for all industries: ALWAYS BE ON TIME. Yes! Be on time. Everyone's time is valuable so be respectful of others by being on time. If you are meeting someone who is always late, you should still be on time. Stop playing their game and stick to your values. You will inspires others to do the same. And like Mike Birbiglia says, being on time is almost impossible because being on time only lasts one minute long.
