Sometimes the best product features don’t come from a roadmap. They come from observing how users are already interacting with your platform. This week, I spoke with Sean (Solme) Kim, former Head of Product at TikTok and Amazon, he shared how the Stitch feature came to life. Instead of following the original roadmap, the team noticed users were stitching videos together using third-party tools and re-uploading them. Sean’s team recognized the friction in this behavior and turned it into a seamless, integrated feature within TikTok. What’s even more fascinating is how Stitch evolved. While originally intended for video reactions, users started using it in unexpected ways, like asking questions and creating interactive content that opened up a whole new genre. Love this point from Chris Walker on how SaaS companies will increasingly need to build and offer professional services (and price accordingly) to recognize customer patterns and ensure customer success. This was the model we had at Pivotal with Pivotal Labs and it drove tremendous depth of insight into what worked (and didn't work) for customers. This didn't mean an ecosystem of systems integrators weren't essential. They were, particularly as customers were ready to scale. But owning the day 1 experience is critical. This doesn't mean PLG doesn't have a place. But as SaaS companies increasingly focus on enterprise buyers, they quickly find the edges of what PLG can solve for. Thanks Kelly Goetsch and Tim Richardson for this engaging conversation, especially around the genesis of commercetools and the MACH Alliance. But, of course there is a but ;) I don't believe that we'll end up (or should end up) with a Shopify vs. commercetools end-game. Commerce technology is not a zero-sum game. We all benefit from a marketplace of ideas, with new and innovative platforms challenging the assumptions of established vendors. Also, I don't think orchestrating a set of microservices to model fundamental commerce primitives is the only (and preferred) way for Enterprise businesses to architect their tech stacks. And last but not least, I'm not entirely sure if celebrity billionaires selling make-up are really our only target audience :)

I've listened (or re-listened) to Lenny's podcast on product-led growth with Ben Williams from Snyk. The full episode is amazing, covering topics from focusing on a narrow group for MVP to implementing growth loops. What really stood out was the advice on how to organize growth teams - the need for removing silos and cross-functional collaboration that I'm seeing more and more in both B2B and B2C. Here's what stood out to me: 1. Building a balanced team around specific goals (acquisition, monetization) that can not just ideate but implement those ideas. This means having: A marketer and or growth role who can run testing experiments Product and dev people to implement ideas Data and decision scientists analyzing immediate and compounded impact Alignment with all exec stakeholders to support PLG as a priority 2. Focusing on identifying micro and macro loops in growth strategy and having patience to implement and let them run over time. Results are never immediate. 3. Ensuring data is effectively tracked and available to identify areas of improvement. This often means aligning and analyzing both marketing and usage data together. This podcast also reminded me of a great series of articles from Reforge on growth loops. One of the main ideas is transforming growth funnels into growth loops by removing silos and approaching acquisition, product, and monetization holistically. Recently I've been catching up with former colleagues and friends. While they roughly know what I do (user testing and program management), they don't always know what that really means. I've always meant to write more about my experience with Field Testing and Product Quality programs and why I think more companies should consider this an essential part of launching new products or features. Field Testing and Product Quality go hand in hand. With Field Testing (alpha, beta, delta, dogfood, etc) being for pre-launch products and features, and Product Quality being designed to capture issues and improvements after launch has occurred. Both have been around for decades in various forms, but I'm always surprised by how little is really understood about them. And how frequently each internal teams view of what they are meant to do are so narrow. If you would be interested in content around this topic, let me know.
