Grid, schmid, indeed! Much rightful rage directed at Centerpoint here in Houston over the past week, and I wonder if its CEO may last the week? But after the big Texas grid freeze failure of 2021, I decided to put in my own solar+battery system so that it never happened again. It sailed through the blackout with ease - wouldn't have even known we lost power except for the notification sent to my phone by my SPAN smart panel. My desktop computer didn't see the slightest hiccup. Now our own outage only lasted ~12 hours, so wasn't able to give every aspect the full stress test, but approach sunset on the first day w 94% in my battery when the power came back on, and am confident based on prior experience in managing these 2x Tesla Energy batteries, that we would have been fine. Wouldn't have cranked the 2 A/C's as hard as usual during the night, but am confident would have made it to sunrise (and next recharge cycle) just fine. In an island of darkness, our home also became refuge for family, and for that I am doubly grateful. The future of energy is not only electric, but more decentralized. The rapidly declining cost of batteries, and a bit more improvement in software, will make such options accessible for many more people. And then, they too, will never have to go through the pain of an extended outage again! https://lnkd.in/d2ssrphd

Russ, that’s great. I made a similar decision and put solar, then batteries on the house. We were out for a couple of days and to make sure we had sufficient power we turned off the central air and used some high efficiency portable A/C units. Went into the first night at 100% in the batteries. Woke up to 55% left (slept at 75F) - recharged to 100% the second night. We had no internet/cell service for two days or we wouldn’t have really noticed (I have a Ting device on a non-backup outlet). So yes worked great.

Russ Conser I’ve been meaning to reach out and ask how you did. Good to hear!

We have 2 TeslaPowerwalls and associated control system linked to the panels we installed last year for just this type of power disruption.  We were off the grid for about 30 hours and had all essential things running as well as AC at a higher than normal setting.  We had a sufficient battery charge level in the morning when they began to recharge.  We’re very pleased with the system operation.

Love those paywalls. Now make solar and batteries affordable and required for multifamily dwellings. Enough storage to make it with hvac hot water etc. 20amp lbs pers power wall. How many would be needed for whole house power? At what cost?

delighted your choice was not a gas generator. Hopefully the up front cost differential will get smaller before long - Form or Found storage may help with the economics, if not for all applications, at least for many.
