After five years in the military and two tours in Iraq, my hiring manager once told me that I had no “real world experience” when applying for a job. I got the job, but was pretty off balance from the comment. My experience felt pretty darn real to me. Want to go a bit deeper this Veterans Day? One tip: ask your veteran friends and colleagues about their goals when joining the military, and ask about their experiences transitioning back into the civilian world. You’ll have a great conversation and maybe learn a bit more about the reasons and lessons learned from public service! To those who served, thank you for blazing a path for others. Your example to us and to potential employers makes it easier for veterans to re-enter the civilian world with their wealth of experience and contribute to great corporate cultures.
