Still reflecting on the really amazing workshop put together by World Economic Forum.. It was a great learning experience in terms of how the private sector and government can collaborate. For some context, The First Movers Coalition (FMC) hosted a workshop in Cape Town, South Africa, in March 2024 to accelerate the transition of hard-to-abate sectors toward near-zero. Leaders from companies, policymakers, and financiers came together to discuss the challenges, potential, and solutions in driving decarbonization efforts in these industries. Key Takeaways: With abundant solar, wind, and hydro resources, South Africa can transition to green hydrogen production, fueling both domestic industries and global markets. Embracing renewable energy and green hydrogen could add 6% to GDP and create up to 2 million new jobs, addressing high unemployment and poverty levels. Developing green bunkering hubs and zero-emission infrastructure for shipping and trucking sectors positions South Africa as a key player in sustainable transportation. Collaboration between government, industry, and financial institutions is crucial for financing and implementing critical green infrastructure projects. Upgrading the electricity grid and port facilities is essential for supporting new renewable energy projects and ensuring reliable power supply.
