So here we are, looking at nearly $9 million in two years for Bill Shorten to make NDIS sound vaguely functional. But really, wouldn’t that $9 million be better spent on, I don’t know, actual government services? He’s there for the glamour shots & ribbon-cuttings, while the real heavy lifting—the actual “running”—is on the shoulders of the secretary & CEO. It’s like being the captain of a ship who just stands on deck waving, while the crew scrambles below to keep the thing afloat. Let’s unpack this cozy arrangement: Title Without the Treadmill – He’s not running the day-to-day, but he gets the credit, the paycheck, & the perks. Isn’t it convenient that the high-paid figurehead doesn’t have to get bogged down with the gritty details of managing services that millions rely on? Just a lot of “vision,” “oversight,” &, of course, a healthy dose of “advisory speeches.” If he’s not the one in the trenches, then how exactly are we justifying the eye-watering #budget under his name? Are we really paying millions for him to act as a glorified spokesperson? A high-priced middleman between us & the ones actually making the wheels turn? If something goes wrong, who takes the fall? The public face, or the people in the trenches? Because, if history’s any lesson, it’s often the people on the ground who get the blame, while the figureheads skate on by with a few well-crafted lines from their $640,000 speechwriter. The classic defense of “it’s expensive because it’s important”. Sure, it's not like anyone’s questioning the need for resources to run big portfolios like Government #Services & #NDIS but come on, can we not gloss over the fact that over a million in two years went to making someone sound presidential? A #minister could be as eloquent as Shakespeare with that much help—or at least, you’d hope. “Operational Expenses” – Right, so we've got $8.7 to $8.9 million for two years of public service here. Presumably essential. Well, government is a big job, right? Needs big money. But how much of this is genuine, down-to-earth office #expenses & not luxury perks dressed up as “administrative support”? $800,000 Salary – Fair enough, that’s the going rate, I suppose. But one might wonder, for all that money, how many days does one actually work? Does reading off a pre-written script count as a full shift? Here’s where it gets cheeky. An allowance buffet worth up to $300,000 on top, yet we're supposed to feel this is all perfectly normal. Does a senior cabinet minister need more incentives to do the job they signed up for? to mingle with the commoners. It’s public service, not a performance bonus on Wall Street. continued in comments 👇 Marie J. Electorate Allowance – you get paid extra just for having an electorate. In theory, it’s for expenses, sure. But if they aren’t giving receipts, how do we know that allowance doesn’t just cover extra bottles of “electorate champagne”? Travel Allowances – We all know travel is expensive. Yet, ever notice how no one at that level ever tries budget airlines or economy? Apparently, work trips on the taxpayer’s dime come with five-star pillows. Office & Staffing Entitlements – Ah, yes, because we need legions of staff to send emails and tweets on someone else’s behalf. You’d think running an office was like producing a Marvel movie, the way the budget inflates here. Speechwriting Services – $640,000, & people are wondering, "Do we need it?" How many speeches does it take to justify nearly three-quarters of a million dollars? 27 apparently. Are they renting out Oscar-winning scriptwriters, or do these speeches cure diseases on the side? & if someone is that hard to listen to, maybe they’re in the wrong job?

Super Contributions – $123,200 for super. Because why not? The rest of us can barely get an employer to contribute 10%, and here’s a public servant walking away with 15.4% for doing the same job everyone else is covering under a “public duty.” Isn’t that a lovely incentive for all those “tough” policy decisions? So, nearly $9 million goes into “public service,” yet it looks suspiciously like a deluxe executive package. With all this cash spent on running the show, you’d almost forget the whole point of government is actually delivering results NDIS is supposed to change lives, not fund a luxury-class bureaucratic roadshow. Nearly $9 million over two years for a single minister. Just a humble public servant, right?
