Danielle Wallace confirms that application is one of the most important factors in knowledge acquisition!
Instructional designers can often fall for the trap of thinking adults learn in a drastically different way than school-aged children.
A high school teacher would never expect a student to hear a fact once and retain that information, but those of us in instructional design frequently make this mistake. We often produce slides chock-full of content without asking our learners to process or apply any of it.
It is so easy to get wrapped up in creating beautiful looking materials, but this article reminds us that the application of those material is what will really make a difference in the workplace.

Crafting inclusive online courses is important for catering to diverse learners. Here are the top three tips to ensure inclusivity:
1. Accessible Design: Employ a universally accessible design, including features like descriptive alt text for images, clear navigation, and compatibility with screen readers. Ensure multimedia content is accompanied by transcripts and closed captions, catering to individuals with various disabilities.
2. Diverse Content Representation: Incorporate diverse perspectives and examples in course materials to reflect the experiences of all learners. Avoid stereotypes and biases, fostering an inclusive learning environment where all students feel represented and valued.
3. Flexible Learning Options: Offer flexible learning options such as adjustable pacing, multiple formats for course materials, and alternative assessment methods. Accommodating different learning styles and preferences enhances accessibility and ensures that every student can engage with the course content effectively.

Putting the Person Before the Process in Instructional Design
As someone who's been in the instructional design field for 19 years, I've seen how easy it is to get caught up in the process and forget about the person on the other side of that virtual call or email. When working with subject matter experts (SMEs) new to designing online courses, it's important to get to know them first.
Start with an informal chat before diving into the project. Ask about where they live, what they're passionate about academically, and what excites them. It’s amazing how this simple step can build a strong foundation for working together.
Find out their strengths and where they feel less confident (and let's steer clear of calling this a weakness—everyone has areas for growth!). By understanding their perspective, we can better support them and create a more effective learning experience for their students.
Instructional design isn’t just about creating courses—it’s about helping SMEs share their knowledge in the best way possible. So, let’s prioritize empathy and connection, putting the person before the process.
