Escalations and production issues are an integral part of being a software engineer. It's hard to imagine a day without hearing these buzzwords. But have you ever wondered what it would be like if there were no customer escalations or issues? What would that even mean? It could imply that we're not building complex solutions for our customers, or perhaps that no one is effectively using the solutions we've built. It's clear that issues and bugs are inevitable when tackling complex problems. So, instead of stressing out, approach them with composure. In fact, take pride in addressing these challenges. When something like this comes your way, see it as an opportunity to grow and excel in your role.

A defining trait of the top software engineers is that they bravely run towards the fire, not away from it like cowards. These engineers are happy to take on their team's nastiest, most brain-melting production issues. In contrast, low-performing engineers actively avoid hard bugs and only put themselves on straightforward tickets. As I'm sure we all know, software engineers make a ton of money. You don't get to that level by setting your life to easy-mode whenever you possibly can. Struggle is when you learn the most. When you get an issue that you have 0 idea how to solve, that is actually an opportunity, not a liability you should run away from. If you want to grow quickly, embrace the challenge and be bold. Relish the seemingly impossible problems. Protect the integrity of your team's systems when the chips are down. This is a defining trait of strong senior engineers. Their bravery to tackle the hardest issues shields their junior teammates until they're more ready for these sorts of tasks.
