This Data and AI Governance startup raised $105 million to release a.... music video! 😵 But, that's not it. The story of Atlan is remarkable, not because they raised millions of dollars,  But because Atlan started as another company - SocialCops SocialCops started as a platform that solved critical world problems through data. 🌏 To do this, they had two teams - the Data team and the Tech team. The data team was tasked with solving the problem using data.  And the tech team was established to supercharge the data team by building tools and tech that made them more agile and reduced inefficiencies. SocialCops was a successful company. 🤑 But, in 2017 they realized one thing - The small tools are leading to big changes. This was the 'aha' moment for the founders 💡 The founders decided to open up these tools for data teams everywhere!  And Atlan was born. Most developer-focused #AI companies face a common challenge: Developer adoption. (Solution one-pager on page 4) Imagine a new AI infrastructure tool like Pinecone has started to gain traction, raise funding and build the ecosystem. The company provides resources like technical documentation for self-directed onboarding, but slow developer acquisition is a choke point. As a critical enabler for ecosystem growth, which ultimately is the only pathway to sustained success, more money is spent on expanding developer acquisition: Reference docs, GitHub repos, meetups, blogs, hackathons and YouTube videos. And yet, many of the developers who got attracted to the tool through expensive marketing activities become frustrated due to a sub-par onboarding experience, hit-and-miss content spread in multiple places, a myriad of minor errors, and a general lack of guidance, all resulting in a lack of cohesive developer experience. ---- Instead of only spending money on acquiring customers who buy their products, these companies need to invest in acquiring and later retaining developers and businesses to build products that use their API. The equation is simple: The more developers build on a platform, the higher the likelihood that they develop great products or that businesses select the company’s tools due to a good talent supply. View from the Office. Met Brett Fischler for lattes at Copper Mug Coffee off Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. We sat in the backyard under a canopy of trees until a deluge forced us to seek refuge inside. Brett is the co-founder of startup Catalist AI, a project management software tool that seeks to use generative AI to collect and organize information scattered across apps in order to generate meeting notes, status reports and operational insights. Brett, an engineer, met his co-founder, Sam Stevens, a product manager, at Google. Before that, Brett had worked at Bloomberg; Sam spent time at Tinder, and American Express. At Google, Brett was assigned a project with Sam during his first week. She seemed to know everything. Later, he found out she had joined the week before. They spent half their time trying to keep track of conversations everyone was having. The notes and communications were spread across a variety of apps. They bemoaned that there had to be a better way. It’s an experience common to product managers, most of whom use a planning tool built by Atlassian called Jira. I used Jira when I was a product manager at Bloomberg and can testify that it can be clunky. Brett and Sam realized that they could leverage OpenAI’s GPT models to collect and process information from a variety of sources and decided to pursue the opportunity. The big opportunity for project management software is to leverage AI to pull together disparate threads and anticipate what steps need to be taken next. Brett and Sam are focusing initially on use cases for tech development. The system could, however, help manage all kinds of tasks. They raised money from friends and family to build a version and started to reach out to others in the ecosystem. Samantha recently gave a talk to more than 15,000 product managers about how to leverage AI in their daily roles. Catalist has several paying customers is looking to convert more from trials. If you read only one thing about AI/LLMs this week, make it this: Thinking through the future for LLM companies… by Sarah Tavel https://lnkd.in/ectNA-e4 Something a little higher level this week — for those of us who don’t build models, the eternal question is whether the model builders will move up the stack to compete on applications, either accidentally (because the models get better at certain things without really trying) or intentionally (because that’s where the money is). Various signs point to the model builders competing specifically on coding — Claude Enterprise getting a GitHub integration, Microsoft/OpenAI via Copilot Workspace, etc. — and Sarah is right to say that coding already has PMF and is therefore a sensible place to play. But it’s far from the only place! Two thoughts: • I agree with those (Sam Lessin among others: https://lnkd.in/eWcz2f_4) who say SaaS is fundamentally challenged by AI. If you can build what you want, why bother letting someone else charge you forever for it? I love the angle of going fully vertical and rather than serving companies with software, just dominate the market with software as a tool. Easier said than done but the logic checks out. • Open source models feel like the wild card here. It’s not a given that the closed foundation models are always going to be better than open source — they have proven easier to work with, especially if you aren’t running a GPU farm, but LLaMa 3.2 and others run pretty well on a laptop. Even the o1 experience feels a little underwhelming (so far) — those of us who have spent a lot of time and treasure building agents and workflows can see that a lot of the techniques we’ve been using for a year are just baked in now. Convenient, but not game changing. I wouldn’t bet on the closed source guys being able to dominate by withholding their special sauce — the sauce is out there, for free, for the most part. But I could be very very wrong on that :) Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!
