🚀 Mastering IoT Success: Solar Tracker with #LTE #CAT1 bis and Dual-Band #GNSS for Centimetre-Precision Tracking.  In the food industry, compliance with the cold chain is mandatory according to current hygiene standards. In the pharmaceutical industry, the requirements are even higher in some cases. The temperature, door opening, and position in real-time are documented. This requires a tracker with a solar cell, mobile radio, GNSS and a #WiFi / #Bluetooth hub. The device is mounted on the container door, either permanently or with a magnet. 🌐 Why LTE CAT1 bis? LTE CAT1 bis was chosen for its cost-effective, widespread availability across Europe compared to #LTEM and #NBIoT. Despite almost a decade in use, 3GPP LPWAN technologies still lack complete roaming support with SIM cards. LTE-M modules have become more expensive than LTE CAT1 bis modules, and their power-saving modes often fail under roaming conditions. With a solar cell generating more energy than needed, LTE-M's PSM mode is irrelevant. Thus, LTE CAT1 bis offers broader network access at lower communication costs. 📡 Innovative Antenna Solution  For the LTE antenna, we selected Harald Naumann's #5G #antenna module, featuring a patented layout by Abracon. This module is designed for cost-effective production and tuning. Each custom-manufactured antenna module includes a coded resistor field, allowing thousands of unique versions to be identified. This flexibility ensures precise adaptation to specific customer needs. 🛰️ Dual-Band GNSS Module for Precision The dual-band GNSS module enhances accuracy by receiving on two frequencies, enabling the correction of timing errors and providing positioning within a few centimetres. The GNSS antenna, also dual-band and dual-fed, retains its circular polarisation even when mounted on the edge of the PCB. In contrast, single-fed GNSS antennas lose circular polarisation, reducing both antenna gain and positioning accuracy. 📡 Wifi / Bluetooth  The combi module with WiFi and Bluetooth already has an integrated PCB antenna. Care was taken to ensure that the antenna for 2400 MHz was not placed near the LTE antenna. Antennas in frequency ranges that are close together influence each other. 🔧 Challenges in Antenna Placement The large solar cell presents challenges in antenna placement, offering limited space within the device. By positioning the antenna module in the centre of the long side, we preserved space on the right for the GNSS antenna.
