Nowadays, web accessibility isn't just a 'nice-to-have' for corporate websites — it's essential. Making a website accessible ensures that everyone, including people with disabilities, can use it without issues. And that’s not just good ethics, it’s good business. Over a billion people around the world live with some kind of disability. By optimizing your website for accessibility, business is making sure everyone, regardless of their abilities, can easily engage with content, products, or services. This can lead to happier customers, increased loyalty, and a broader audience. Additionally, accessible websites often perform better in search rankings, as search engines favor sites that are user-friendly. By following accessibility standards like WCAG, companies also reduce the risk of legal issues as accessibility laws become more common. My first hands-on experience creating a fully accessible website took place at the British Heart Foundation, where we ran lab sessions with volunteers. Their input was invaluable to our web development team. Equipped with this experience and knowledge, I moved on to new challenges. The latest project that my colleagues and I have worked on is Marsh's corporate website, which was rebuilt from the ground up. Among other goals, one of our primary aims was to achieve WCAG 2.2 accessibility standards. Needless to say, it took a considerable amount of effort, but the result was well worth it. At launch, we comfortably passed the tests to comply with the desired web accessibility standards. I invite you to share your stories about making the web a more accessible place for everyone. What challenges did you face, and what tools and techniques did you employ to overcome them?
