You have to be a math whiz to be a software engineer. Even after I got into computers, I thought this was true. Teachers and people in software engineering had told me as much. I had no reason to doubt them. So, I spent years building software on my own, feeling like I couldn’t do it as a professional because other people told me I wasn’t good enough at math to do it. At some stage, I learned two things: First, you don’t have to be good at math to be a software developer. It definitely makes it easier, but it’s not a prerequisite. The field is so large, that there are infinite ways you can contribute and grow in it. Second, I was better at math than people (including me) thought I was. I just wasn’t great at memorising times tables and didn’t learn the way my teachers were teaching. I learned a ton about math while learning how to program and it just made sense. If I could give younger me a single piece of advice, I’d probably tell him to stop listening to other people and just do what he wants to do. No one else can decide what you are or are not capable of. Don’t give them that power over your life.
