The #Actuaries Institute is calling for the annual Superannuation Performance Test to transition to a two-metric test, so it better aligns with the overarching duty of super fund trustees to act in the best financial interests of their members. Adding a #risk metric would allow the test to better cater for #investments and strategies that do not naturally align with the prescribed #assetclasses and #benchmarkindices used by the current test. https://lnkd.in/gh64rXVR

The ATO has issued a warning to trustees of SMSFs about sloppy valuation practices. ATO data analysis has revealed that over 16,500 SMSFs have reported assets as having the same value for three consecutive years. With many of these assets being residential or commercial Australian property, you can forgive the ATO for asking questions. https://lnkd.in/gdc6F5Fb This remediation is adding to Australian Super costs and has an effect on their returns. $650 for 100,000 members does not sound like much, however at a guess it will cost around 3 times $650 per 100,000 members if you include costs of discovering, processing and refunding the remediation issue. Or $1,950 per refund including the $650 paid to the member. For total costs of approx $195mil. Whereas the article suggests only $5mil in extra costs or $50 per remediation case I find this highly unlikely if costed out properly. However I'm happy to be corrected with evidence from Australian Super. So total costs of approx $195mil not the $70mil suggested. As returns with this style of fund are effected by costs maybe one of the many possible reasons Australian Super returns are inadequate at the moment.
