At our most recent Redland Disability Network meeting we discussed the importance of language when speaking to, referring to, and writing about #PeopleWithDisability
We're 10 years in with the #NDIS with the goal for a more inclusive society, one where #PeopleWithDisability are acknowledged, respected and included in all aspects of society.
And then there's this, from a registered #NDISProvider whose webpage is littered with commitments to #QualitySupport, #PersonCentredSupport, #Respect, espousments of the skill, commitment and qualifications of the Director and staff etc. etc. etc.
One wonders what the thinking is in the organisation, how this got there, and why it remains there, if this is an organisation subject to the highest level of scrutiny the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission imposes.
#PeopleWithDisability deserve so much better than this 😡

The invitation to the Town Hall briefing on the NDIS Review indeed raises questions about the depth of engagement and inclusivity in the decision-making process. While attendance is welcomed, the format of the event suggests a top-down approach where stakeholders may feel relegated to passive observers rather than active participants in shaping the future of disability support services. Here's a critical analysis:
Tokenistic Engagement:
The invitation may be seen as tokenistic, as it primarily offers the opportunity to be briefed rather than actively engage in dialogue or decision-making. This limited level of participation may not fully represent the diverse perspectives and needs of the disability community.
Power Dynamics:
The format of the briefing implies a power dynamic where the NDIS Review Panel holds authority and control over the conversation. This may hinder genuine collaboration and meaningful exchange of ideas between panel members and community stakeholders.
Transparency and Accountability:
While the event aims to provide information about the NDIS Review's blueprint, it's essential to scrutinize the level of transparency and accountability in the review process. Are stakeholders given sufficient opportunities to provide input, challenge assumptions, and hold decision-makers accountable for their actions?
Accessibility vs. Inclusivity:
While accessibility options are provided, true inclusivity goes beyond physical accommodations. It involves actively valuing and incorporating diverse perspectives, experiences, and voices in decision-making processes.
In summary, while the invitation offers a platform for engagement, it's crucial to critically examine the extent to which stakeholders are genuinely empowered to influence outcomes. Moving beyond tokenistic gestures towards meaningful inclusion requires ongoing efforts to address power imbalances and prioritize the voices and needs of the disability community in decision-making processes.

The recent developments on NDIS reform highlight the critical balance between financial sustainability and ensuring the integrity of support for people with disabilities. With a proposed annual growth cap of eight percent, the federal government aims to address the forecasted surge in costs, which could reach $50 billion by 2025/26. While managing these costs is essential, it’s equally crucial that reforms do not compromise the accessibility and quality of support for participants.
At Indie Lifestyle, we are committed to being part of the solution. Our focus on innovative, cost-effective housing solutions for people with disabilities can help alleviate some of the financial pressures on the NDIS while still delivering high-quality, person-centered support. By working closely with the NDIS, Partner Providers and the Disability community, we can help ensure that the scheme remains sustainable and continues to empower those who rely on it.

Michael lives with an invisible disability, and his journey with the NDIS has been both challenging and rewarding. Invisible disabilities can often be misunderstood because their effects aren't always visible to others, they aren't immediately apparent. Yet, they impact daily life in profound ways. Ravi, our director, has a remarkable ability to understand and address the individual needs of each participant. His leadership and compassion guide us in delivering personalised support that makes a real difference.
We believe that everyone deserves to be seen and supported, even when their challenges aren't visible. Michael's story is a testament to the importance of empathy and tailored care. 💙🌟
