This week back in 1978, work began on a revolutionary new computer - the Apple Lisa - the world’s first commercial computer with a graphical user interface. And I had the enormous pleasure of talking with someone who was there at that time - John Couch, who was both Steve’s colleague and friend for many decades.
Steve personally recruited John to help him build this “revolutionary computer" in 1978, just two years after Apple had started, and thus making John Apple’s 54th employee. Soon after, John became Apple's first Vice President of Software and then became General Manager, overseeing the Apple Lisa computer division.
Prior to joining this new startup called Apple, John was one of the first fifty computer science graduates at University of California, Berkeley and had a well-paying, secure job working at HP, under the tutelage of its iconic founder, and a hero of Steve Jobs, Bill Hewlett. But. as he tells me, there was something about Steve’s vision that drew him in and made him leave his job at HP for the exciting yet vastly unknown.
Six years later, John left Apple to work in education before becoming the CEO of a biotech company called DoubleTwist. He was then recruited again by Steve in 2002 and returned to Apple to take on the newly created role of Vice President of Education – a position he remained in until his recent retirement.
In 2018, John co-wrote "Rewiring Education and this year, he published his latest book - “My Life at Apple and The Steve I Knew" which is a book we dig deeper into in this episode.
As Steve Wozniak says, “John is one of the most interesting, intelligent, and passionate people I've ever met. Both Steve and I viewed him as an essential part of what made Apple the most innovative company in the world, even as he remained one of our best-kept secrets.”
It's a great episode, and a wonderful peek into tech history.

A bit of coincidence that I picked up the this book today and could immediately relate this to the "Exponential" innovation by Apple and *Steve Jobs*, who btw would have celebrated his 69th birthday today.
Interesting to see how Apple transformed the digital mobile and music industry, and then examples of Henry Ford applying the car manufacturing lines from the meat packaging industry, or YouTube starting off as a dating site..and many more..
Essence being there are examples all around us from totally different businesses and industries, that we can apply to ours !
Apple's Memories function is by far and away my now favorite feature of the entire Apple ecosystem. Whatever they are doing with AI and photo recognition tools coupled with the tech that turns my pictures into these incredible slideshows deserves all the awards. 5 years ago, whatever, didn't care, but my PRIORITIES HAVE CHANGED! Seeing precious memories of my kids come to life in this way? Priceless. And the sharability to my wife, parents and friends simply adds layers to the value. That's my key takeaway today. In a position of saturation and you want long-term existential staying power? Layers upon layers of value while you ideate on new offerings.
On April 1st, 1976, three friends, Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne, and Steve Wozniak, founded Apple Inc. Their debut product, the Apple 1, was designed and hand-built by Wozniak, primarily to fund the company's inception. Yesterday marked Apple's 48th anniversary.
Today, Apple Inc. stands as the second-largest company on NASDAQ, with a valuation of USD 2.65 trillion. Its success underscores the power of top-notch products and unwavering brand loyalty.
"Life can be so much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that everything around you that you call 'life' was made up by people who were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use. Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.” - Steve Jobs
Happy Anniversary, Apple! You've truly lived up to the "Think Different" slogan. Here's to making the world a better place.

Yesterday marked the 40th anniversary of the Apple Mac. 📠
If consumer electronics have changed this much during that time, why haven't payments❓ ❓
I wrote a blog (link in the comments) exploring the shifting dynamics of the payment infrastructure industry, as we transition from incumbent to innovator 🌱
If there are any other early-stage payment infrastructure companies that I have missed, please let me know in the comments! 🚀
Leadership and Performance Coach. Helping leaders and aspiring leaders find their confidence and their voice to engage effectively with their teams and audiences.
💭As a coach with a theatre and literature background, I find this concept from 1984 fascinating.
At 18 years old, studying this text in the very year that was being predicted by Orwell, I was horrified by his dystopian depiction of the thought police.
I probably pictured myself being called to action rather like the hammer wielding woman below.
I would like to think that 40 years on, leg warmers no longer a thing, that we have a better grasp of neuroscience and our ability to think for ourselves.
I may not be weilding a hammer in fury at the brainwashers, but I do offer a safe and confidential coaching space in which to think freely as your generative listening partner.
What do you think?
I’m listening…

"Oh sh*t. This is amazing."
That was Steve Jobs' reaction to the now-iconic "1984" Apple ad – which was initially opposed by the Board of Directors.
Directed by Ridley Scott, it became a cultural phenomenon and a pivotal moment for product launches.
And today marks the ad's 40th anniversary!
The ad aired during Super Bowl XV and featured a young woman running with a sledgehammer, ending with the line:
"On January 24th, Apple Computer will introduce Macintosh.
And you'll see why 1984 won't be like '1984.'"
Despite the initial opposition, the ad became a key part of Apple's history and marketing legacy, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation and challenging the status quo.

Less has always been more.
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple, he reduced the product line from 180 SKUs to just 3—a crucial step in Apple's journey to success. Similarly, life is too complicated to try to do it all.
It's tempting to cater to everyone and do everything, but those who achieve greatness usually master one thing first. For those who haven't yet found success, it's even more important to focus before expanding.
Think of it this way: Machine 1 pays the bills. Machine 2 scales and makes more money. Once you have those running smoothly, you can build as many machines as you want.
All the greats succeeded by excelling at one thing first. For me, I'm gradually honing in on my "one thing." I'm learning more about the types of clients I can work with and those I can't, optimizing my services to better cater to a specific target audience—my Machine 1.
As for Machine 2? That won't start until Machine 1 is fully operational. But I believe beginning to document my journey here on LinkedIn is the first step.
