“𝑵𝒐, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕’𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝑰 𝒔𝒆𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒓 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒎𝒆𝒂𝒏𝒕.” Ooof, I really missed the mark with my drawing… That caught me off guard. I was asked to create a visual of the future student who would attend a new educational program: what they would learn and what skills they would have by the end. I had plowed through all sorts of descriptions, with various images flashing through my mind. I sketched, erased, and combined ideas until I came up with a few drawings. Feeling fairly satisfied, I showed what I had created during the first meeting with the client. One person’s initial reaction was enthusiastic. The other was very clear: “This isn’t it.” I shrunk a little—not physically, but my confidence took a hit. I was still fairly new to working as an illustrator and was looking for some reassurance, which I didn’t get at that moment. Luckily for me, the two women didn’t agree with each other, so I could focus on that. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲. A rich discussion emerged in the team, and together we created the right image of the future student. Sketching on the spot turned out to be a fantastic way to check if everyone in the team shared the same understanding of what they had written. It was also a confirmation to me that text can be interpreted in many ways—even by people in the same team who wrote it themselves! So now, I don’t read before I draw anymore 😁 Not for educational teams, nor for researchers. Well... I still read, but just quickly. I no longer base my sketches on what I’ve read. It works much better to draw while being in a conversation. Finding the right image is a journey, and together we create the most fitting visual. Each time, I find this process so rewarding. And each time, teams and researchers alike tell me how enlightening (and fun!) it is for them too. Only when the core message becomes absolutely clear can I create an image that truly fits. One that hits the mark. How do you make sure everyone in your team has the same understanding?
