This is a great reminder. I might also add that one factor that impacts civility is the behaviour of the top leadership. Working for a jerk makes it challenging, and often jerks hire jerks, it’s what they know and recognize, this pattern significantly impacts civility in that poor behaviours are often tolerated throughout the organization and civility is viewed as weak by those who fail to practice it. Your culture is defined at the top - what does your organization do to shape your culture? #upheavalbook GlobalSway #leadership #digitalleadership

It is it not just about not being rude. It is about being actively kind and bringing a positive mindset. It is about considering others’ needs and prioritising them over your own when needed. It’s about being a decent human being. Do we need the price tag to realise how important this is? Do we need the price tag to take action and defend the victims? #justsaying #kindnessmatters

Please share this segment on ‘incivility’ and its ramifications. Incivility takes many forms across many environments: microaggressions, rude comments or even reductive ‘compliments’ to name a few. Certainly all of us can attest to experiencing it or witnessing it… and we know that incivility has been normalized in our society. I highly recommend watching this presentation. Be Your Best, Jason

In numerous instances, the problem lies not in the absence of civility among individuals, but rather in leaders' reluctance to address uncivil behavior within their teams due to the discomfort of confronting it. This distinction between courageous and cowardly leadership becomes evident, shaping the workplace culture significantly. By encouraging open communication and accountability, leaders can empower their teams to cultivate a culture of mutual respect and professionalism. This proactive approach fosters a positive work environment where every individual feels valued and supported, ultimately leading to greater success and fulfillment for all. #positivemindset #mindset #society

Very insightful. I think that most new managers believe that being tough will establish their position as a leader. This Ted talk seems to suggest a different approach. I lead many teams in various capacities from 50 student-member organizations when I was in business school to 30 member teams when I was in corporate. One thing that I never neglected is to appreciate and praise individual members for their efforts, even when the efforts don't seemingly deserve such praise. I have my unique portfolio of flaws as a leader, but this was not one of them. I encourage others to appreciate every delivery from your team members. I creates value over the long-term.

When you hear the word #incivility it doesn't immediately feel like an issue in today's "civilized" world. But, sadly enough, it's not a rare phenomenon! Listen to this TED talk to know more about the survey that has been done on incivility in workplaces and it's negative impacts on people.

I rarely post on LinkedIn, but this Ted Talk on 'incivility' resonated deeply with me. Somewhat glad to find a term called 'incivility' because at least I can now name this experience. For the most part, I think incivility is meted out unconsciously. Organizations that invest in leadership learning opportunities and arrest 'incivil' behavior may do a better job at enabling a more happy workplace culture. Since the video talks about incivility being contagious, people who experience it can be more self aware of not propagating it themselves. We can stop it from compounding further helping shift the trajectory towards more compassionate leadership.
