Three people from New South Wales have been jailed for their roles in a multimillion-dollar fraud against the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Investigations allegedly identified a syndicate operating across three companies to defraud the NDIS of millions of dollars in false claims, and of making false claims for GST refunds to the ATO. Some of the claims received NDIS funding for people who did not have a disability by providing false medical reports. The two men and a woman have been sentenced to a combined 12 years’ jail and ordered to repay a combined total of more than $575,700.
Way too much NDIS fraud going on. Well done AFP, but what's wrong with the NDIS system that people can commit this type of blatant fraud?
The AFP investigation began in December 2020, in partnership with the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), AUSTRAC and Services Australia, investigating several suspected fraudulent NDIS providers in western Sydney. Investigations also identified fraud on the Australian Tax Office involving the exploitation of the GST regime, and the Australian Tax Office joined the investigation. Pointless if the judges do not impose a significant sentence.
Well done. Low life, better off behind bars.
Oh so that’s how they afford to drive those cars!!
People sometimes talk dismissively about morals, but morals AND values are everything to maintain an orderly society. From my years experience working in government I concluded we need to be more intentional about teaching Australian morals and values to all our citizens, especially overseas arrivals.
This kind of thing really is outrageous. Literally stealing from disabled people and making it harder for them to access services. 12 years gaol isn’t enough in my view.
I am sure there is many more taking advantage of the most venerable in our community. Keep it up.
During the search warrants, the AFP seized 8kg of gold bullion, about $600,000 in cash and $635,176 in cryptocurrency. They also seized three vehicles, including a BMW M3, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne with a combined value of about $250,000, and a significant amount of jewellery.
