97.5% of people cannot multitask effectively.
I am pretty sure I am one of those people, yet I sometimes feel that I can context-switch pretty well. 'Well, why is that?' I wondered.
3 Factors affect our ability to effectively context switch:
* Complexity and/or quantity of parallel tasks
* Level of interruption
* YOU
Context-switching tasks are extremely difficult, especially when you are juggling multiple roles and tech stacks as a high-performing developer trying to level up.
It also seems to be a required skill, as all senior/staff-level developers can answer questions while doing code reviews.
I am taking 3 steps to be an effective developer who can mimic effective multitasking.
3 Key Actions I am taking:
📆 Schedule everything: Setting clear timelines and allocating specific time slots for different tasks helps me stay organized, focused, and group similar tasks to minimize context switching in the first place.
⏰ Prioritize tasks: Identifying the most critical tasks and tackling them first ensures that I make the most of my productive hours.
😎 Keep me happy: It's easy to overlook, but maintaining a positive mindset and taking care of my mental self is critical and helps me stay consistent.
Mastering context switching isn't just about being busy—it's a valuable skill that will let you do the most important things productively. Is there any action you've taken to help with context-switching? Let me know in the comments! Let's help each other! 💼✨
