BOOK: Contested Monarchy Integrating the Roman Empire in the Fourth Century AD To Prussian king Frederick the Great, a crown was merely a hat that let the rain in. Alas, it is not that simple! Pomp and circumstance are essential to monarchic rule, and a crown is far more than a hat, even still more than just a symbol of political power: a crown is a medium in the communicative processes between the ruler and the ruled—a medium (among others) through which sovereignty itself is carved out in the first place. The idea that a king might just as well do without his regalia (or take off his crown as if it were just a curiously shaped hat) rests on the implicit assumption that the constitutional substructures of political power provide legitimacy in and of themselves. This, however, is a fiction of early modern political theory. A king is not just a private person who occasionally wears a crown to indicate his constitutional right to govern a given polity. Rather, a king is the sum of the social roles he assumes to negotiate ways of exercising his rule when encountering his subjects. To put it differently, there is no such thing as the king’s two bodies: analytically speaking, it makes no sense to differentiate a ruler into his human reality, on the one hand (the body natural), and his social functions, on the other (the body politic)—notwithstanding all the folk tales that reflect precisely the desire to strip the ruler of his insignia, if not of his clothes altogether. A crown, then, is not an item that symbolizes the king’s body politic; it is a set of communicative acts superimposed on a particular material object, embedded in a dense texture of performances and discourses from which monarchy itself emerges as a highly complex social system. While in al Koni’s novel what matters is how the desert leader wears the cloak of power, what matters in history is how the king utilizes his public roles as instruments of sovereignty; representations of virtue, honor, glory and the like—values a crown can stand for—serve as communicative reference points for fostering subjects’ identification with the political order. A crown, then, can provide nodes of legitimacy, just as other acts and symbols may contribute to the general acceptance of the king’s claim to sovereignty. Thus, the most obvious element of earthly command, the availability of coercive force, or power, is tranformed into rule not by constitutional sleight of hand, but by legitimacy— in the sociological, not the legal, understanding of this concept. I have a very laissez faire view of digital footprints — the kind that I’m sure will scare Glenn Gore and the most staunch arbiters of privacy. As a digital native, I see how my data identity has been used to the best of effects. My TikTok algorithm is a beautiful work of (relatable) art: my Instagram, an unending funnel of things I didn’t know I needed to buy. I’m quite certain I’ll go mad if one day my digital identity gets reset. Sometimes I wonder how it got to this. My logic is that my data is always being mined and used six ways come Sunday. It’s inevitable the more digitally connected we are. Today, with the rising trend of online scams, there’s an even higher need to protect and identify consumers. And how do you identify consumers? Through the exchange of data. It’s all very poetic really — the thing that will protect us is also the very thing that we need to surrender. It’s why I still retain mixed feelings about what Gore has to say about data: “At Affinidi, securing digital identities is a priority as we navigate an increasingly digitised society, ensuring individuals can confidently claim their digital existence.” But can we though? Do we need to? I’m not sure. For me, the digital data surrender is an inevitability, so the Internet might as well deliver me information that I need and may enjoy — like a tinted serum from Rationale or a pair of wide-leg pants from Marakech. Still, I admire Gore’s sense of hope with his North Star at the Temasek-funded firm — “Where your personal data is as intrinsic to you as your physical self and treated with the utmost respect and privacy.” Because in a world where data is as easy to mine, dole, and exchange as promises and opinions, hope is perhaps the very thing that we need. A curious figure stalks the pages of a distinct subset of mass-market romance novels, aptly called desert romances. Animalistic yet sensitive, dark and sexy, this desert prince emanates manliness and raw sexual power. Though his aggressive, potent virility is common in the realm of romance novels, what makes him curious is his steady rise in popularity in the intervening years since September 11, 2001, years that have seen a concomitant, and dominant, rise in depictions of Arab masculinity as backward, particularly in relation to what is understood as a violent nature, and therefore as repulsive. In this respect, the figure of the sheikh-hero as a romantic figure demonstrates a set of ambivalent associations that thrive on the mix of violence or danger with the thrill of pleasure and desire. Indeed, this may be why the metaphor of radiation is put to much use in desert romances. Radiation invokes a potent reservoir of seemingly endlessly available and potentially dangerous energy. It is thrilling precisely for its potency; it remains on the exciting side of danger with reassurances (built into the overall plot narrative) that the heroine and the sheikh himself ultimately know how to harness and control his radioactive energy. Despite the “finger of fear [that] stroked [the heroine’s] spine” as the sheikh-hero approaches, despite the fear that she might not be able to stop him, even if she wants to—on the contrary, perhaps because of these things—the heroine is irresistibly drawn to the sheikh-hero. In these instances, her fear activates her desire—not because romance novels particularly appeal to duped, naive women, but because the books serve as abundantly fruitful materials for investigating how desire functions, particularly in relation to potent sociopolitical realities. The “nuclear weapons” that Sheikh Tarik in Secret Agent Sheik can power with his “left-over nervous energy,” it turns out, do not invoke terror in the heroine, which would be a logical response, given popular associations with Arab/Muslim men and nuclear weapons. She does not fear the sheikh-hero, because by this point in the plot, she has encountered the sheikh’s opposition—the real terrorists, who truly do seek nuclear power for evil means. The connection of the sheikh to nuclear weapons therefore serves as a way of highlighting his exceptionality. As a force of good, he has demonstrated himself to be allied with global U.S.-Anglo powers that similarly seek to vanquish the terrorists. Radiation works as a powerful metaphor in this local example because of its ambivalent associations. The sheikh can simultaneously demonstrate his link to the thrill of risk and danger, while assuring the heroine that he has the ability to control the awesome power that radiation can release.
