Geoffrey Hinton's contributions is significant enough that I won't quibble with the category for his prize. (Nobel committee could create a special category just for him for all I care.) Widely (and rightfully) recognized as a leading expert in deep learning, his research touches everything from * Foundational concepts such as backprop https://lnkd.in/gMunbBzA * Foundational model architectures such as AlexNet https://lnkd.in/gq2JPJ6h * Optimization algorithms such as Momentum and RMSProp * Visualization techniques such as t-SNE https://lnkd.in/gjuw3vhA I don't think it's possible to overstate how profound the impact of machine learning and artificial intelligence will have on society, promising to unlock discoveries, improving productivity. Even ideas about what mastery of language or reasoning means, will need to be re-thought. Professor Hinton deserves all the credit for all of this.

ruby-lsp is a solid extension to use with vscode. I spent some time today with it debugging a couple of complex issues and I was able to dig deep into our dependency tree easily without having to manually search for things. Definitely give it a shot if you're using #ruby #rubyonrails.

AI is innovating a variety of industries across the US and Agriculture is no exception. 🐄 My new friend, Catie McVey, has created a new "Agtech" startup that uses patented 3D Modeling and Machine Learning algorithms to evaluate the health of cows by looking at specific characteristics such as hoof morphology and facial characteristics. Working with her to architect how to get source data from "The Stockyards" to "The Cloud" has been a lot of fun. I am constantly discovering new ways AI can make an impact in industries from legal, to healthcare and now agriculture! I find interesting the hype about counting downloads for a given tool as a metric for success. I guess it helps to show how popular something is, but I would love it if people also considered other aspects, such as project governance and project activity. Anyway, let's follow the trend (evidence in the comments): - Selenium Java downloads: 98.5M in May 2024 - Selenium active users in the last 30 days: 2.6M. Happy automation!

In just one year, we made 10 offers, toured dozens of homes, and combed through hundreds of listings. After repeatedly coming up short, I had a realization — the current tools weren't serving the actual consumers: homebuyers and homeowners. 📈 In Portland, home prices have surged by 85% and mortgage costs have tripled in just five years. We're in the midst of a nationwide crisis marked by limited supply, skyrocketing prices, and escalating borrowing costs. With this increased pressure on consumers, homebuyers need all the help they can get. 🔍 Home inSights is built to empower buyers and homeowners with personalized insights, community discussion, and smart comparison tools. You may be a home owner wanting to better estimate the equity you can roll forward, waiting for the right home to popup within a school district, or a new buyer with constantly changing buying power. I learned some cool things about software used in the solar industry at RE+ from some really smart software engineers and I thought I would share about the products they are building. Arvin Ansari from https://jasmine.energy explained to me how his YC backed software company is helping enable the sale of carbon certificates for solar panel owners to large corporations via the block chain. It's truly remarkable how they handle a large amount of capital. Also, Greg Eisenberg from Aurora Solar showed off the https://lnkd.in/evdQZEsQ tool that they have built for solar installers installing commercial jobs. They used a variety of map apis to help installers determine how to wire up their solar panels and distribute them on a roof. They truly are industry leaders for software in the solar industry building very interesting solutions.

I came across a pretty cool project the other day called Real World that allows you to see a side-by-side comparison of the exact same app written with different frameworks (React, Vue, etc.). Project update! My application tracking extension is now doing fuzzier matching and injecting new information into LinkedIn (and other sites) to keep me from doubling up on applications. Next up: local storage and bulk import/export operations...

Had a very good experience working on #OpenRewrite these last few weeks with some great engineers including Tim te Beek. I improved robustoness and migration of #Jmockit Expectations, and added JMockit Verifications (v8.29.0) and NonStrictExpectations (v 8.30.0) migration to Mockito. Hope it helps anyone out there migrating from JMockito to Mockito. #java #refactoring #migration

I am very interested in the intersection between software and the solar industry! Surprisingly I don't see many software companies at RE+, but they are definitely springing up as this space continues to expand and companies need software to help with sales, market efficiency, data analysis, observability and security. Sellifyai.com is interesting. They are generating leads for the solar industry and installers. Ensights.ai is interesting as they try to build a more general software solution. These companies are very young which encourages me to think of what niches and possible opportunities there are to fill some gaps and provide solutions.

I would love to connect with other teams using AI Agents on their docs, community forums, or other spaces with a large amount of ingested content. Is that you or someone you know? I'm interested in discussing user behavior (for example - do users provide full sentences or keywords only) and any best practices you've generated for content gardening/maintenance (beyond SEO).

A meta note about this talk: I am, as a lot of folks out there know, not exactly bullish on LLMs in general. I think most of the hype is nonsense—even while I think some of their capabilities are really astonishing!—but I do think they’re here to stay. So: First of all, if we’re going to be working in a world where people are authoring code with LLMs (Copilot etc.) and using them to “do things” as agent-based systems, the world of inputs to the models matters, as do the environments in which they run. They matter a *lot*! Second, I think a lot of engineering organizations pretty consistently underinvest in foundations, because of the simple realities that many kinds of foundations projects take longer and have a less direct/measurable connection to profitability. They just do, no way around it. Third, then, what are the ways that engineering leaders—including managers, but especially Staff+ engineers—can mitigate the risks of LLMs and improve the chances that they are net neutral or even positive, rather than negative, for software quality, UX, and business outcomes? Secretly (and yes, I am saying it out loud now!) it is predicated on my belief that THESE ARE THE THINGS WE SHOULD BE DOING ANYWAY… but this is a moment when we have a really obvious reason how and why these things matter, with which we can make that case to decision-makers. And because these are the things we should be doing anyway, an organization which uses this LLM-hype-moment to improve the foundations on which we run LLM-related systems… will be in a better spot two years from now *even if the LLM ecosystem craters*. Seems like a win.
