📢 eco Comments on the BMDV Progress Report on the Gigabit Strategy In response to the latest progress report on the Gigabit Strategy presented by the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), Klaus Landefeld, eco Chair of the Board, expressed cautious optimism: “With the revision of the Telecommunications Act and the introduction of a Gigabit Strategy, policymakers have laid important groundwork. However, we remain skeptical about the BMDV’s optimism, as the strategy’s real-world effectiveness is yet to be proven. While companies have pushed forward with investments in fiber optic and mobile networks, Germany still ranks low among OECD countries in fiber usage. Meeting the 100% expansion target by 2030 remains uncertain, and there is a lack of clear planning for the copper-glass migration.” Landefeld also highlighted concerns around uncoordinated approval processes and varying degrees of progress across federal states. So a question people have asked me, what's the difference between the DPA 2017 vs 4017C. Just posted our latest video showing the DPA Microphones 2017 on a Radius windshields RAD-2 Shock Mount. Two pretty simple recommendations for this mic. However, in addition to the 2 setups in this video you can use our softest hoops for more isolation if only using indoors with a foam. Honestly I'm not qualified enough to talk in detail about the acoustic differences between the 2017 vs the 4017C. What I can say is that the mics sound similar but not exactly the same. Personally, I liked the sound of my own voice using the 2017, but preferred the 4017C for a few nature recordings I did. The 2017 is a bit heavier than the 4017C (not by a crazy amount but noticeable). However the 2017 is still lightweight in terms of other shotgun mics. The body of the 2017 also feels very solid. Lastly with regards to wind protection -- the mic capsule on the 4017 is a bit further back from the front of the mic than on the 2017. So with a 12cm Nimbus or other slide on wind protection with a rubber end cap, you don't have to "bottom it out" on the 2017 ... just slide it past the line where the preamp starts. INSIGHT: State of UHD Broadcast in Europe With the 4K Summit taking place from November 11-14 in Seville, Spain, where broadcasters from France, Spain, and Italy will present their progress on UHD deployments, now is the perfect time to review the state of UHD broadcasting in Europe. In Spain, Televisión Española (TVE) was the first terrestrial broadcaster to offer Ultra High Definition (UHD) content. In February 2024, TVE launched a nationwide free-to-air UHD channel via Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), initially simulcasting its main channel, La 1, in UHD/HDR. Notably, the SD switch-off has not yet fully occurred in Spain, and once SD broadcasting ceases, more spectrum will become available for additional UHD channels. In France, France Télévisions (FTV) was the first to offer UHD content on terrestrial television. During the Paris Olympic Games in August 2024, FTV launched a nationwide free-to-air UHD channel via DTT, initially simulcasting its main channel, France 2, in native 4K resolution for Olympic coverage, while France 3 content was upconverted from HD to 4K.France is looking at deploying UHD only channels by 2028, this would only be possible if it is mandatory regulation. The solution deployed in Spain and Italy are DVB compliant and is a brute force simulcast of UHD in addition to the already deployed HD channels, needless to say those solutions are not efficient in terms of spectrum usage. Germany, on the other hand, has so far limited DTT transmission to 1080p SDR and has shown little interest in advancing beyond that resolution. However, German broadcasters may deliver UHD services through other distribution networks, such as pay TV (DTH, Cable, IPTV). Italy lags in UHD adoption for two main reasons. First, a significant number of TVs in Italy still cannot decode HEVC signals, and the current priority is to migrate all broadcast channels to 1080p SDR in HEVC. Second, there no spectrum available for UHD, making solutions like MPEG-5 LCEVC appealing due to its bandwidth efficiency. In this setup, the HD channel would serve as the base layer (in SDR), with the LCEVC enhancement layer providing a UHD HDR signal that only newer TVs could process. Notably, such a backward-compatible scheme has yet to be deployed, meaning Italy would be the first to do so. In the UK, there are no plans to upgrade the DTT network for UHD, with an IP transition planned instead for all broadcast channels. The BBC is expected to lead this transition, although the timeline remains undefined. Nordic countries have established a UHD specification,  but no deployments have occurred to date. As our smart TV home screens gravitate to global viewing, it stands to reason that expanding the Geo-Block ban on the audio-visual sector must include expiration of regional licences and introduce one single content licence. Not just for Europe, but for every streaming territory as a whole. Although much can be said about content quotas, they are in fact near-sighted to the fact that technology and consumers are driving this demand because of the content choices audiences are making. Netflix features content in over 60 languages, with 80% of the platform’s users claiming to use subtitles at least once a week. This implies that content providers would be compelled to make movies and TV shows unlicensed in one country but sold in a neighbour available on the same streaming service on the same device in Amsterdam or Sydney. The Convergence Opportunity for ATSC 3.0 and 5G NR Multicast Broadcast Service https://lnkd.in/eNK5Q7xb Abstract – This paper will introduce a new service called “Direct 2 Everything” (D2X). This service takes advantage of both ATSC 3.0 and 5G NR capabilities to provide a combined service offering. The D2X system leverages the strengths of each individual standard to provide a converged system with improved overall performance in terms of spectrum utilization. In order to allow for a harmonized service offering, we propose to extend the ATSC 3.0 physical layer standards to better align with the 5G system architecture and be complimentary to the 5G New Radio (NR) Multicast Broadcast System (MBS) standard. There are no modifications to the ATSC 3.0 standards other than the extensions which allow the current system to continue without disruption. To design a combined system, the 5G standards were first studied to identify the key harmonization points. The ATSC 3.0 physical layer standards were then used as a baseline and extended to allow for interworking with 5G NR (MBS). #D2X #5G #Harmonized #Interwork
