Survey Insights from TACK Insider Members Take these steps: "Overwhelming Value, But..." Many members appreciate the massive content, but some feel overwhelmed. They need guidance on where to start. The influx of new “Modern Marketing Measurement” vendors is both exciting for marketing leaders, but also a bit overwhelming. Beyond the five vendors that map particularly well to Google’s new “Modern Measurement Playbook” framework (which I shared in a previous post - see link to that in the comments), there are probably at least 10 more developing compelling solutions, each with their own unique strengths and shortcomings. As just one example, I’ll call out the new MMM+ from Northbeam. Their 2-minute video quickly convinced me that their solution deserves a closer look. But honestly, almost everything I’m seeing is compelling enough to explore in more depth. I’m going to schedule demos with a number of these solutions to kick the tires. Because demos like this are especially valuable when many people join and ask a range of questions, I plan to organize them as open conversations that anyone can join. For anyone interested in participating, leave a comment below and I’ll make sure to share specifics about time, date, which vendor, and questions I’ll be asking.

The tech industry created a strange expectation that marketing leaders should be inventors, each bringing with them a unique approach to marketing. It's an expectation that seems to only fall on marketing. Imagine hiring a CPA, and asking them what their "approach to accounting is" and if they had their own P&L measurement framework. And yet this is exactly how marketing leaders are often judged. Throughout my own career, I often felt a pressure to present unique approaches, from as simple as an updated way to determine an MQL to entirely new definitions and funnels. And, while it's changing now, I would have felt like I failed if I brought in consultants to help build out elements in the program. That was, after all, what I had been hired to architect. Sales, on the other hand has very successfully made external training a normalized event, and touts their methodology training proudly. Leaders see value in MEDDIC-trained teams, but there isn't an equivalent appreciation in marketing. And I believe it comes down to two main symptoms: 1. Marketing is not seen as a scientific field, but as an experimental function 2. There is a major lack of formal marketing training in the industry The first of these is not easily solved and, if we're honest, comes with its own share of deserved skepticism from leadership. Years of claiming credit for deals that were breathed on by marketing has eroded trust in marketing and created higher bars for proving impact. But the second IS solvable within the marketing community. Marketing is very much a field with decades of scientific research and huge bodies of repeated data findings. It is, however, a much more cognitive and behavioral field than a a pure mathematical one, and that's where we've often lost our way and our trust. Understanding consumer behavior, brand awareness, memory structures and decay, risk aversion decision making, and content attention habits provides a very solid foundation to build creative campaigns on. It won't immediately solve the trust issues, but it will hopefully normalize the sharing of commonly agreed-upon ideas, rather than constant attempts to invent our own. Which, at best, causes us all do the same thing but calling it different names, but at worst it causes us to do ineffective marketing in the name of different. And that will certainly not help build an industry trust in marketing.

Are you measuring the impact of your content the same way as other teams — and should you? One thing that stood out to me from the recent Beam Content 💡report is the gap in how content marketers measure content success and how others do (full report link in the comments). Different teams are going to value different things most of the time. But, I do encourage content folk to always be aware of the sales and revenue impact — even if it's a few steps down the line. What is your primary metric for measuring content success at your company?
