I had the privilege of interviewing Craig Williams, the CEO of Cyber Synergy, a successful minority-owned technology company that is breaking barriers in the federal defense contracting space. This interview was deeply significant because, despite the immense talent in minority communities, only a small fraction of IT contracts in defense are awarded to minority-owned businesses. The disparity is even greater among African American-owned companies. Craig's journey serves as an inspiration and a beacon of hope for underrepresented groups striving to make their mark in this challenging industry. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, African Americans own only 2% of all small businesses, and the percentage in federal defense contracting is even smaller. Craig’s success not only highlights what’s possible but also underscores the urgent need for more inclusion and support for minority entrepreneurs in this sector. His insights and resilience are a powerful reminder that with determination and vision, we can begin to close this gap and create more opportunities for everyone. Let's continue to uplift and support minority-owned businesses as they navigate and succeed in these critical areas. Innovation when it comes DoD Cloud Computing As the DoD at large embraces cloud computing, distinguishing between innovation and resource waste is crucial. Let's talk about innovation: Innovation: Definition: Innovation in DoD cloud computing involves creating solutions against recognized lines of effort, improving processes, and leveraging cutting-edge technologies that address the big 3 (improve cost, improve security, and improve mission outcomes). Questions innovators ask relating to: 1) Technology and Modernization... “How can we leverage emerging technologies enhance our capabilities?” "Then who do we work with to scale, create repositories from others to learn from our journey, and get this out to the force through a CI/CD pipeline?" “What cybersecurity measures should we prioritize to protect sensitive data and critical infrastructure?” "Do we need to work with someone to update cyber security policies or practices to encourage these practices if they are not already the norm?" “How can we integrate cloud computing effectively into our operations?” "Do we even need to, and under what conditions or types of workloads?" "Are there cloud services available I can leverage that create efficiencies, reduce burden, and simplify security and operations?" 2) Mission Alignment and Impact: “What innovative solutions align with our mission objectives given to us by the joint force commander or the military department readiness objectives?” “How can we optimize resource allocation to achieve maximum impact?” "Am I balancing innovation with steady state readiness requirements to got to war tonight?" “What metrics should we track to measure success?” "Can I demonstrate metrics across the big 3 (improve cost, improve security, and improve mission outcomes) to seperate myself from just doing one-off experimentation?" 3) Collaboration and Partnerships: “How can we collaborate with industry, academia, and other government agencies to accelerate innovation that leads to scalability and sustainable successes?” “What best practices can we learn from other defense organizations worldwide?” "Are there repositories or collaboration efforts to grow the profession and what is my role in creating them if they do not exist?" 4) Agility and Adaptability: “How can we foster a culture of innovation within our teams versus and not just one-off experimentation that dies when someone leaves?” 5) Regulatory and Legal Considerations: “Am I trailblazing by working to get policies and regulations changed to make things easier, or am I breaking barriers that require senior leaders to create exceptions to policies that only apply to my organization?” DoD innovators play a critical role in shaping the future of defense, and are not focused on breaking barriers as much as they are concerned with creating pathways for others to follow.
