This mission, known as SSLV-D3, signals the transition from testing to operational readiness and sets the stage for future commercial satellite launches. The mission carried two satellites, EOS-08 and SR-0 DEMOSAT, both of which were successfully placed into their intended orbits. Describing pseudo satellites as 'an unblinking eye' 👀 really highlights the value platforms like PHASA-35 can bring when it comes to enduring surveillance. Production for the Space Development Agency’s (SDA) Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) constellation is in full swing, and Northrop Grumman is one of the primary contractors producing satellites for what will soon be a global constellation of missile defense and data transport satellites. The space economy is growing at an unprecedented rate, and all operators and spacefaring nations need to be responsible with their actions. The recent Long March 6A debris incident and another in 2022 occurred at a critical altitude, and the debris will be there for decades. The risk posed by debris in these orbits affects us all. This is the second major debris incident involving a Long March 6A launch, and there are plans for numerous future launches to complete this constellation. The potential for additional incidents is a cause for concern and runs contrary to current standards and norms.   Our team is gathering available data and will be working on characterizing this breakup over the next few weeks. The recent incident with Long March 6A continues to reinforce the need for norms against intentional debris creation. CSPS has published several papers on establishing norms for the space environment. Policymakers who want to get to a broadly accepted set of norms for space may want to look to other domains for lessons. U.S Army Selects LIFT Aircraft and Near Earth Autonomy “to Develop Uncrewed Blood Delivery & Casualty Evacuation System.” LIFT Aircraft announced this week that the company has been awarded a contract by the U.S Army Applications Laboratory (AAL) to design a medical multi-mission modular payload container that can carry blood supply and casualty evacuations (CASEVAC). Lockheed Martin Sikorsky Advances to Next Phase of Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability Program The NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) has awarded Lockheed Martin Sikorsky a contract award to study integrated platform concepts that could fulfill NATO’s next generation rotorcraft requirements through its Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) program. “Sikorsky is ready to design a rotorcraft prototype for NATO’s NGRC concept study to support defense and deterrence for an ever-changing global environment. Years of investment and rigorous flight testing with multiple X2 technology demonstrators have proven its ability to change the future airspace,” said Andy Adams, vice president of Sikorsky Future Vertical Lift. “Our X2 aircraft will bring to bear the strengths of Lockheed Martin along with input from our European Industry Group, such as digital thread, advanced manufacturing, sustainment, training, and weapon and mission system development, to provide NATO with an integrated rotorcraft system that combines speed, range, maneuverability, survivability and operational flexibility.” Lockheed Martin Sikorsky’s European Industry Group includes Tier-1 aerospace suppliers, such as BAE Systems, ELT Group, ESG Elektroniksystem-und Logistik GmbH, GE Aerospace, Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Kongsberg, Liebherr-Aerospace Lindenberg GmbH, MAGroup, Malloy Aeronautics, SAFRAN, Rheinmetall and TERMA. This industry group will provide input as to how their world-class military products can support the X2 integrated platform concept approach to advance NATO’s capabilities and provide a next generation rotorcraft solution. With more than $1 billion invested and 15 years of testing and flying, X2 rotorcraft, Sikorsky’s X2 aircraft are demonstrating mission relevance. The S-97 RAIDER technology demonstrator’s rigorous flight test program continues to provide critical data that correlates to a virtual prototype and enables Sikorsky to experiment with the unique capabilities that an X2 Technology rotorcraft can provide. NSPA General Manager, Ms Stacy A. Cummings, stated: “The launch of Concept Study #5 is a significant milestone for the NGRC concept stage activities, and demonstrates NSPA’s dedication to meet the challenge of next generation medium lift for Participating Nations. The strategy to launch 3 parallel contracts awarded by competition delivers on our commitment to maximise industry expertise, opportunity and engagement in the programme, and will provide a broad range of potential concepts in the study results for our multinational customers.” The NGRC program initiative began in 2022 and includes France, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and Canada. The United States and Spain are currently acting as observers. Space special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) were a hot topic in 2020 and 2021. The years since have not been kind to most space companies who participated in this trend. All recent space SPACs, even the most successful, are trading below their initial public offering. Below are two examples of space SPACs that have been in the news recently for unflattering reasons. ASTRA SPACE The SPAC Feb 2021: $2.6 billion valuation At the time, Astra had not yet launched a completely successful mission Recent Financials 2023: nearly $3.9 million in revenue, net loss of $178.4 million 2022: $9.4 million in revenue, net loss of $411.4 million The Decline Sept 2023: conducted a one-for-fifteen (1-15) reverse split of its Class A Common Stock 2023 & 2024: Considered bankruptcy and started preparing for Chapter 7 March 2024: Board accepted an offer from CEO Chris Kemp and CTO Adam London to take the company private VIRGIN GALACTIC The SPAC Oct 2019: $2.2 billion valuation At the time, the company had flown successful suborbital flights with employees but no commercial flights yet Recent Financials 2023: $6.8 million in revenue, net loss of $502 million End of 2023: cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $982 million 2022: $2 million in revenue, net loss of $500 million Recent History July 2021: first fully crewed flight June 2023: first commercial crewed flight As of April 2024: 6 commercial crewed flights to date 2024 Q2: 7th commercial flight planned The Decline Nov 2023: Stock fell when company announced it will reduce the frequency of flights and stop them entirely by mid-2024 to focus on Delta-class vehicles to be operational in 2026 March 2024: Boeing sued Virgin Galactic over unpaid work and proprietary business information concerns April 2024: Virgin Galactic counter-sued Boeing for “shoddy and incomplete work” April 2024: trading below $1, Virgin Galactic will ask shareholders to approve a reverse stock split STRUGGLING SPACE SPACS Other struggling space SPAC companies include: Terran Orbital Momentus Spire Space SPAC Virgin Orbit went public in 2021 and bankrupt in 2023. NOT ALL BAD NEWS Space SPAC Rocket Lab is an exception. Rocket Lab Aug 2021 SPAC with valuation of $4.1 billion At the time, the company had been launching for 3 years, had 21 mission attempts with 18 successful missions 2023: $244.6 million in revenue, net loss of $182.6 million ASTRALYTICAL ANALYSIS In 2021, Astralytical advised investors not to invest in space SPACs, which were largely risky and unproven. Most space SPACs were pre-revenue and pre-operations. The most successful space SPAC, Rocket Lab, already had a proven business case and ongoing operations. ATLAS Space Operations Raises $15M to Expand Ground-Station Software 📡 ATLAS Space Operations, a US-based ground station service provider for satellite communications, has secured $15M in funding, led by NewSpace Capital, a Luxembourg-based private investment fund, to accelerate the growth of its ground-station network and software. CEO John Williams shared that the company has doubled in size in recent years and expects to grow fourfold in 2024. The new capital will support a hiring surge, particularly for software engineers, to enhance ATLAS’s software-driven network optimization. With the increasing demand for space data, ATLAS is positioned for rapid expansion, including tapping into European, Middle Eastern, and African markets. These executives from venture-backed companies argued that while the Pentagon has created several initiatives to collaborate with private companies — such as the Defense Innovation Unit, the Office of Strategic Capital and SpaceWERX — these organizations focus heavily on seed funding and research-and-development contracts.
