After an amazing trip to Austin, one thing is clear - this city’s tech scene is thriving, but scaling comes with serious challenges. Here’s what tech founders and tech leaders are facing: • Talent shortages: The U.S. will reach a 1.2 million software engineering shortage by 2026. (Bureau of Labor Statistics) • Rising development costs: Between January 2018 and January 2024, developers' median base pay grew by 24%, now more than double the U.S. median salary (ADP Data). • Cybersecurity risks: Two-thirds (66%) of tech leaders rank cyber as their top risk for mitigation in 2024 (PWC). This article showed up and was appropriate for what's going on in my world now and in September at Business Technology Association event in San Antonio. It's almost as if someone is tracking my interests. 🚀 AI, like all the next shiny things, without a real-world application to drive revenue is more than a distraction, it can be counterproductive with out an actual roadmap. Don't get me wrong, I rely on AI daily to increase my bandwidth and the team's efficiency, and it's working. 💪 We are able to do things faster, better, and most importantly reduce the investment needed by our clients to utilize the platform. We didn't get there as efficiently as we should have and the new shiny thing needed work. 🤖 ChatGPT, Claude, and embedded AI make a difference, but they're still only as good as the talent you have prompting the response. Thinking that AI will make you efficient at a new skill that others have invested years to be be subject matter experts at is not a great investment. 👏 West McDonald is a great conduit of all things AI and provides guidance for companies looking to explore areas of AI that are beneficial. I attened his break out session this week at the BTA event, and he gets it. West McDonald's partnership with Keypoint Intelligence is a great resource for you to consider when navigating this new world and I am positive he can reduce the learning curve for utilizing AI. 📅 In September at the Business Technology Association event in San Antonio, Texas, I will be sharing AI tools ERPIZO used to shorten and automate business planning processes from hours to minutes. 🙌 Faris Delija was instrumental in creating this workflow and he will be joining me to share our process that you can hopefully use with your team. We are not AI experts but found this process beneficial internally and for our clients. 🎙️ I will also be hosting a panel of business owners who have found benefits in AI and are willing to share their real world application. Update from last post... THIS is why we started Summit Venture Studio... I have now overlayed the Summit Venture Studio portfolio over the portfolio Spencer Walker and I worked on at the University of Utah I showed in my last post. The grayed out parts of the graph are the companies from the U of U and the green and red are the Summit portfolio. I think we are tracking in terms of value creation (quite a few assumptions in the numbers). So now at Summit we have several portfolio companies generating revenue and are ready to take off and they are out pitching to investors. During COVID we bought a little app called Ignite and turned it into PushPress Train. At the time I didn't realize how hard an acquisition would be (even though everyone warned me). For 2 years, we didn't have the resources to give it the love it needed - and the market pounded us for it. Our customers hated it. The integration was terrible at best. It affected everything in our business negatively - our churn rates, our NPS, our customer happiness. After raising our Series A we had the resources to fix this and we did. We upgraded Train in all ways and folded it directly into our Member App. We added programming partners to it, so our clients now get hassle free workouts loaded directly into their gyms. We improved the integration into Core. Now we're doubling down. For the first time ever we have a dedicated engineer who's only job is to make Train amazing in deeper ways. As a CEO, sometimes your decisions might be wrong in the moment but they aren't final answers. Acquiring Train was a bad decision for 2 years... until it wasn't - and now it's a vital piece of our product ecosystem!

The local AI movement continues to build momentum. Don't blink. (I'm serious!) Real flags are being planted, especially around #ResponsibleAI. Groups like #Cincy AI for Humans continue to pack the University of Cincinnati’s UC Digital Futures building, proving that the progress is not only real and meaningful but wonderfully authentic. Startups like my own BrandRank.AI are popping up. Another group, CAIC (Cincy AI Catalyst, which I co-founded with Carl Fraik, is pushing responsible AI, AI in education, startup creation, and putting the Midwest on the national map. On top of that yet another force, the Enterprise Technology Association (led by Summer Crenshaw) is spearheading with CAIC and other groups are pushing Cincy AI Week June 11-13 (yes right around the corner).
