Social researchers have been increasingly interested in autoethnography, as an “insider stance” can reveal unique and important insights on a given topic. Despite these benefits, using autoethnography in a strict academic setting can be challenging, even in research circles more receptive to the use of this method. After all, isn’t autoethnography just an “n of 1”? How can self-study maintain researcher objectivity? While perhaps an interesting story, how can it generate valid knowledge useful to a broader community? This paper guides autoethnographers as they leverage this valuable methodology without sacrificing the requirements of robust and academically credible research.
