Some of my favorite features about Siemens TIA Portal. A lot of us talk about documentation when it comes to panels but let's talk about user friendly code & documentation. If your not documenting your code for your customers you are doing them an injustice. TIA Portal makes it extremely easy to not only group & create a folder structure for your projects but also add items like identification & maintenance. Trust me you will be thankful for it, always been a Rockwell guy but damn TIA Portal is so powerful & modular. Check us out, happy coding & happy fathers day! #MAC

Some great questions regarding our Rockwell to Codesys conversion software. Q: It does SLC and CLX, can it also so Micro and Compact? A: Yes all of these are included. Q: Does it include comments. A: Yes, the current release does convert over rung comments for all. Q: Does it come with documentation A: Yes, the Aug 15 release will come with a Help file and of course we are only an email away to help. Q: Are all UDT's and AOI's converted. A: Yes all UDTs are. All AOIs are as long as they are not locked Q: Does the software document what it does not translate A: Yes, it creates a text document that outlines this

Last week was a real throwback moment for me—I spent some time working with an old RMC100, and it definitely made me appreciate how far we've come in motion control technology. We were interfacing with a 25-bit multi-turn SSI encoder after a hydraulic leak damaged the original one. The replacement was an eBay find, and, of course, it was configured slightly differently. Honestly, I struggled more than I’d like to admit, trying to get the scale and offset right. At one point, we had the motor jogging for over 10 minutes just to get the encoder to wrap and finally start showing readable numbers. But once we got there, things started to click. We reconnected everything, scaled and offset the axis, and got the injection molding machine’s screw back up and running. It was a frustrating process, but sometimes those are the ones that teach you the most. Working with a 30-year-old product was humbling—it really makes you appreciate how far we’ve come. YASKAWA YRC1000 training at The Motlow State Automation & Robotics Training Center (ARTC) in McMinnville, TN. I'm attending YASKAWA training this week at Motlow State Community College. I highly recommend the ARTC for automation training. We are fortunate this week to have Charlie King for an instructor. Charlie has many decades experience in real world automation and is sharing his knowledge with current and future automation professionals by spending his retirement teaching automation skills. Charles has a passion for teaching and does not hesitate to help students during the class. A special feature of training at Motlow is each student has their own robot cell to train on, no sharing with another student like the corporate training centers. This is a huge benefit since people learn at different rates. When sharing a training cell, one student might be faster or slower than the other which can sometimes lead to some tension and one student might miss out learning a concept. Motlow offers training on YASKAWA, ABB, and Fanuc (otherwise known as the blue, white and yellow robots). McMinnville Tennessee is about an hour and a half drive from Nashville, well worth the trip. Excellent install this week for Russell Logic! This automation redesign of an existing line was a fun one. Separating an operation from the main line presented an excellent opportunity for some automation upgrades. We were able to utilize an existing DENSO VS-6556-W robot for an upgraded load robot from the old UR-10E, which enabled us to increase cycle times. Utilizing my simulation from WINCAPS III software allowed us to hit the ground running once power was on. We upgraded the Denso RC8A controller to Ethernet IP from its old discrete comms and created a custom, seamless AOI and UDTs for simplicity in the PLC commands to and from the Robot. This, plus endless IO back and forth really expanded our capabilities with this robot. (Denso AOI and UDT available upon request for MiniIO and Ethernet IP.) Safety was upgraded as well from some messy safety relays to a KEYENCE CORPORATION GC-1000 Safety PLC, utilizing the S1R relay output expansions to satisfy the Robot and our PowerFlex 525 VFD's. We did away with gates and utilized a Keyence SZ-01S area scanner (God I love the SZ's) for the Robot Area, which talked seamlessly to the GC-1000 over GC Link. Being separated from the main line, we ran a Rockwell Automation 5069-L330ERM PLC for this cell which allowed for some long overdue logic cleanup utilizing the standard Russell Logic PLC templates. Picking a non-ferritic plate with holes was a unique challenge and the customer worked with their COVAL.SAS rep to utilize their Lemax products. In the past I've used the Piab Group Kenos systems for challenging part handling, but I am very impressed with the Lemax product series! Russell Logic is ready for any challenge! Good afternoon LinkedIn. Quick question for all you AuroCAD, Eplan, or any CAD style software users. I'm debating about getting a curved monitor for at home, specifically an ultra wide format one, similar to the Samsung Odyssey, but not necessarily that model or brand. What is everyone's experience with these monitors when using CAD or some type of CAD software, which can include EPLAN, or Solid works, etc? I've read some good reviews and some bad reviews on these, mainly about the curved screen can distort or make the lines look curved on the screen. As we all know, the internet is not always a trust worthy source (go figure). 😆 Any helpful feedback would be good. 🤘 www.abisonautomation.com

Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how much PanelView HMIs are an absolute piece of garbage? A lot of us take for granted how far PLC programming has come, until we have to work an a DOS based system or even just a SLC with no comments and horrible cross-reference functionality. But, thanks to PanelView, we have a constant reminder of how bad HMI / SCADA systems can be. Granted, there are some convenient features, but none of them come to mind. But I should not have to upload, restore, convert, edit, build, then download just to change the text on a button. AutomationDirect's CMORE series is as simple as upload, edit, download and the whole user experience is a lot smoother IMO. They're cheap, reliable, and as feature rich as you need for a standalone machine. You need a enterprise SCADA solution? Inductive Automation allows for almost-live edits(you have to deploy, but 9/10 times the operator doesn't have time to notice). Oh, and the development software is free and they don't change their pricing based on how many tags you use. So to Rockwell Automation, thank you for the constant reminder of how innovation has improved the industry over the years.
