Our role is essential because many of the students do not have college counselors in school because of the cutbacks in the local budgets.

    I volunteer to teach English as a second language to immigrants who come to the United States from around the world. As an immigrant myself, I understand the challenges faced by many immigrants. Many of the students are adults who need assistance to speak English. My goal is to enable my students to speak fluent English so that they can mingle and connect with fellow Americans. The experience is highly rewarding.

    The Frank Hawkins Kenan Award was established in honor of the late Frank Hawkins Kenan who was a tremendous benefactor of the school. This award recognizes the student who best exemplifies Mr. Kenan’s commitment to excellence, honor, and leadership, with this year’s recipient certainly embodying each of these values among others.
    This student has demonstrated commitment to our core values from the minute he set foot on campus. he brought a tireless commitment to excellence in the classroom and in service to fellow CLASSMATES, THE MBA COMMUNITY, and beyond. Academically, he thrives as a dean’s scholar and induction into Beta Gamma Sigma. He serves the MBA program in a variety of capacities, including president of the investment management and tennis clubs, a TA for the Investments elective, a member of the investment management fund, and coordinator for the MBA program’s annual blue cup competition against Duke's Fuqua School of Business.
    The praise amongst his classmates is seemingly endless. As one classmate put, “he is one of the exceptionally brilliant individuals that empowers and enables others to stand out and grow”. Another states, “he is constantly working with different students to support them and create a better community at unc kenan-flagler”. Multiple classmates thought of him as a worthy winner of any of the core value awards, making him the perfect recipient for the Kenan award.
    During the blue cup competition, our recipient really stood out among his peers. His classmates praise him for being “very supportive and embodying teamwork”, explaining that his support went to all students both participating in and watching events. He even set an example by winning the sport he participated in early on in the competition.
    Another classmate describes him as “a thoughtful friend, demanding leader, and might be the busiest man on campus” and that “he is constantly pushing himself and the organizations that he is involved in to greater heights”.
