Many opportunities in this market - the next ten years will see significant changes in digital infrastructure across the continent. Undersea cable systems alone have gone from around 10 to over 70 between 2014 and 2024. Great progress, but a lot more investment is needed and the market demand is there. Helios Investment Partners is playing an active part in this digital revolution, unlocking new markets and opportunities every year.

🌍 African Venture Capital: A Path to Recovery? 🔎 In the past two years, African VC has experienced a sharp decline, with funding dropping from $6.5 billion in 2022 to $4.5 billion in 2023, and just $780 million raised in the first half of 2024. The retreat of international investors, especially from North America, coupled with rising global interest rates, has led to a significant funding crunch -particularly at growth stages. However, this market recalibration presents an opportunity. African startups must now focus on profitability and sustainable growth, rather than simply scaling. At the same time, building local capital markets and expanding the investor base will be critical for the ecosystem’s long-term resilience. Emerging sectors like climate tech are showing promise, but a strong regulatory and infrastructural foundation is key. As inflation cools and potential interest rate cuts loom, will we see renewed foreign interest? More importantly, can the African venture ecosystem adapt to ensure sustainable, long-term success? Sonoma, Ca - Women in CVC Summit! 65 women in CVC gathered together for real, honest conversations about the challenges and complexities in CVC investing versus traditional venture capital. CVCs face challenges such as aligning the interests and expectations of the corporation and the startup, managing the relationship and communication between the two parties, and balancing the trade-offs between strategic and financial returns. But what's truly inspiring is the impact women are having in this space! Female-founded companies exit faster but make up a smaller share of total exit activity. CVCs participated in 17.5% of all female-founder deals in 2023, while more CVC firms have majority female checkwriter representation. Furthermore, female founders closed a record of 22.8% of total VC funds in 2023. We are thrilled to support this vibrant community of women alongside our friends and partners, Counterpart Ventures. Interesting insights from Ilya Strebulaev of Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Author of "Venture Capital Mindset" (https://lnkd.in/grwNji8g) : 🌍 None of the top ten companies by market cap in non-US G7 countries (UK, France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan) are VC-backed. 🇺🇸 Six of the top ten companies in the US are VC-backed. (as of June 8, 2024). ⏳ The average age of the top ten in non-US G7 is 132 years, with none younger than 50 years. 🆕 The average age of the top ten in the US is 78 years, with six being younger than 50 years. These figures starkly illustrate the innovation gap. While the US nurtures scalable startups through venture capital, non-US G7 countries lag, despite substantial government programs and subsidies. This highlights the need for a shift towards a venture capital mindset to foster scalable, change-driving startups (independently being built or part of larger enterprise initiatives) that can bring substantial value to their ecosystems. Continuation of my term sheet series for founders and anyone raising a round of capital be it equity, a SAFE, or a Converible Note Areas Always Requiring Attention Most frequently negotiated issues in termsheets: • Figuring out the right valuation • Making sure the option pool is the right size • Considering how to construct the board • Structuring founder vesting terms • Sizing the round and minimum needed to close • Structuring the liquidation preference Valuation is vitally important, but the rest of the terms should be within fairly narrow market norms.
