Meet Kamnsi Arachie, Battery Cell Engineer at Proterra! Tell us about your background and where you grew up: I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and later moved to the U.S. to pursue my undergraduate studies at Northeastern University. There, I majored in Chemical Engineering, while also minoring in French and Music. What do you enjoy most about your role at Proterra? What I enjoy most about my role at Proterra is the autonomy and exposure to cutting-edge technology. The freedom and flexibility to bring my authentic self to work while contributing to impactful innovations make it particularly rewarding. What motivated you to join the clean transportation industry? Growing up in Nigeria, where electricity shortages are a significant issue, sparked my interest in renewable energy, sustainability, and energy storage solutions. I’ve always been passionate about exploring alternative energy sources and how we can store and harness them effectively. What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? Outside of work, I love traveling, solving puzzles, and reading. I also enjoy playing the piano and saxophone.

How can liquid electrolyte solutions be designed to enable practical next-generation lithium-metal batteries? This question was tackled at our recent seminar, where we had the great pleasure of having Dr. Wu Xu from PNNL as our guest speaker. During his talk, Dr. Wu Xu took the audience on a journey to develop advanced liquid electrolytes, from bad-performing carbonate-based electrolytes to state-of-the-art ether-based electrolytes. Here, he showcased how several salt and solvent combinations affect the properties of the lithium-metal battery and explained why weakly binding solvents and high (localized) salt concentrations can lead to an effective SEI formation. Ultimately, Dr. Xu gave an outlook on liquid electrolyte development and the quest to achieve a practical cycle life with over 99.9% Coulombic Efficiency with lithium-metal anodes. Meet Noah Montrose. Noah is an undergraduate researcher with the Advanced Materials Laboratory (AML) at Boise State University. He performs mechanical and chemical tests on additively manufactured (AM) Inconel-718 monoliths to help create a data set to predict the location specific properties of AM metals as part of the Transformational Challenge Reactor (TCR) project which intends to help qualify AM metals for nuclear applications. We're excited to share our newest paper on "Thermodynamic Natural Gradient Descent" (TNGD) by Kaelan Donatella, Sam Duffield, Maxwell Aifer, Denis Melanson, Gavin Crooks, and Patrick Coles. In this paper, we introduce TNGD, a novel hybrid digital-analog algorithm that leverages the thermodynamic properties of an analog system to efficiently perform second-order optimization of neural networks. This is the latest in a series of papers from Normal Computing researchers showcasing our journey to build faster, more efficient AI systems capable of complex reasoning. We show that: - TNGD can greatly reduce the computational overhead typically associated with second-order methods. - Based on simulation results, TNGD outperforms state-of-the-art first-order methods like Adam and provides large speedups over other second-order optimizers - There is potential for co-designing algorithms & hardware to overcome limitations of conventional digital approaches This builds on our recent results presenting the world's first thermodynamic computer, performing the first-ever thermodynamic linear algebra experiment, and using our novel hardware to quantify uncertainty in neural network outputs.
